Yesterday’s post contained a little surprise. A letter from teh DVLA kindly reminding me that I hold an HGV license and would I care to go back into wagon driving.

No thanks but shows how desperate they are. I like my current job very much thank you 🙂

I’m on a grandad licence so technically I can drive a 7.5t truck – wonder when my letter will arrive! 🙂

Desperate, but not desperate enough to improve pay and conditions.

    So it’s your fault?!

When the children are crying ‘cos they have no toys on Xmas morning, the in-laws are complaining at having roasted squirrel for xmas dinner and the car’s brakes have rusted solid due to not moving in months for lack of petrol. We are all allowed to say “It’s all that selfish Danny on stw fault who thought he was too good to spend days at a time away from home, ****ing in poly bags, bathing in service stations and sleeping in lay-bys”

Think of the poor children! 😎

Certainly gave me a giggle (or at least a wry smile).

Thing is right now I have a job which is as close to zero stress as it can be and wokring for a boss who genuinely cares about their staff and actually enjoying life.

    They can **** off…

One of my staff got one too. He wondered if that’s even a legitimate processing activity of your driving license data by DVLA. There doesn’t seem to be anything in their privacy notice about processing your data to solve government crisis…

@poly – I have been having similar thoughts however on the list of things I am not going to bother about right now, picking a fight that I am going to lose and with now end gain with the DVLA is at the top.

Baroness Vere of Norbiton should train up for an HGV license. Sounds ideal candidate.

I didn’t get one despite having 7.5t on my licence. I assume it is because of the motorbike related 6 points!

Supermarket trucker here,I’m waiting for my letter to arrive, workmate recieved one yesterday.
I got talked out of taking early retirement last week,I’ll give them until mid Feb.

This government is utterly ridiculous. Have they not bothered to process why people might not be working as HGV drivers.

    That’s a different licence category (C1), HGV is C or C+E.

    LOVE, BARONESS VERE OF NORBITON.

Honestly, you couldn’t make it up. Can’t see her wanting to sleep in a layby by the A14 any time soon.

So do they expect people to come out of retirement, leave their present job ( for worse pay/conditions ) out of British patriotism.

This one is nearly as bad as: ‘So you’re a retired doctor, probably severely at risk of dying from Covid. How would you like to come back to work in a high risk environment with little or no PPE because we’ve been underfunding the health service for years and have a crisis?’

A friend got one of these too.

He ripped it up, stuffed it in an envelope addressed back to them and included a brief hand-written note along the lines of “Clean up your own mess, I voted Remain”.

When my letter arrives I’ll be sending back with the same comment!

Before entering politics, Charlotte spent 4 years as the Executive Director of the Girls’ Schools Association, including 6 months as the General Secretary of the Independent Schools Council. Prior to that she was the CEO of Big White Wall, an online mental health service, and Finance Director at Recruit Media, a digital recruitment agency. Her early career was spent in investment banking.

It’s just as I thought, Baroness Vere obviously has a deep understanding of the life of an HGV driver.

I expect tramping is in her blood, going back generations.

When this story broke a couple of days ago, I read about a 90 year old getting a letter. He’d been retired 25 years, so I doubt it’s an age thing!

Mine came yesterday as well. It’s actually from the Department for Transport rather than the DVLA. My last drive was about this time last year and had a duration of 18 hours once I’d finally finished and I’ve not driven an HGV since then. I’m going to tear mine up into 4 squares and hang it in the bog.

Are the pay and conditions really the governments fault though? Removing the cheapish labour from the workforce with no plan B certainly is but not so sure about the actual shitness of the job. The haulage industry did what every other industry did, followed the market, there was plentiful qualified labour so wages and conditions were depressed, any haulier trying to keep pay high would go bust, blame the hauliers customers for that one if you want.

So for everyone blaming the government for the conditions of drivers, what do you expect the government to do about it? Free rest areas with facilities, shorter hours etc. all down to the haulage industry to manage.

PS the government still caused the underlying mess though Brexit for which I will never forgive them.
PPS. also agree about the GDPR implications of the DVLA acting like this.

Also got mine yesterday. I should imagine that many recipients are in the same position as me in that their driver CPC has lapsed, or they never had one.

Notice how the Baroness isn’t offering to pay for that.

This letter is targeted at those who have left the industry, and therefore, surely, are unlikely to have a valid driver CPC, yet there is no help to get that sorted, only the vague bit about some employers may have a scheme…..it’s a litle bit of style and absolutely no substance, isn’t it?

(My licence was paid for by my current employer as it suited to have someone who could drive an HGV at the time, but it’s over 5 years since I needed it).

Luckily we are now free not to take part in anything like this:

    https://ec.europa.eu/transport/modes/road/parking-areas_en

Obviously the provision of safe rest areas is a governmental responsibility, as is the tax status of HGV drivers, which is one of the main ‘drivers’ of people leaving the industry.

And these clowns are the very cause of the issue in their quest to drive down wages and conditions to suit the haulage bosses and retailers pocket lining mission.

I worked briefly for a Logistics firm 20 or so years ago as a baby transport manager, I did a class 2 license as the firm I was seconded to used a number of 23T (leased by us) and it was imagined I could be a replacement driver if needed. Took lessons and passed the test, and the firm went bust…I’ve never had one. Last time I drove a truck was 20 years + ago. on my test.

My Dad did HGV driving on and off from the 60s to the 90s.

He can’t say enough bad things about it as a job 🙂

I note that one member of the Sainsbury dynasty has donated £2m+ to the Tories since the early 2000s.

I did my HGV years ago in Army, so as ex-HGV and ex-army i am expecting a recall to ask me to drive lorries monday to friday, do the bins on a saturday and then maybe put some fires in a 60’s Green Goddess if i have some spare time…

Yeah, I’m no supporter of this government, but blaming them for absolutely everything seems a bit too convenient.

Which clowns are you talking about? The government didn’t drive down wages. Ultimately this is caused by consumers, us, wanting cheap goods in the shops. And retailers driving down supply chain costs to compete. Arguably the current mess may help rebalance things a little in the long term, with us all paying a little more for goods to pay for better wages/conditions for drivers ?

Jesus there really is no hope for this country looking at the attitudes displayed in this thread. Talk about cutting of your nose to spite your face!
Brexiteer or not, we are where we are. You can either help out or quit moaning about the lack of food on the shelves and petrol in your car.

Nope, I didn’t vote for this pile of shit. I’m going to moan about it just the same as those who voted for Brexit moaned for years about foreigners and how it was all better in the old days.

So, I’m not going to help any Brexiteers who put me in this shitty situation, and I’m not going to stop moaning about it until they do.

Baroness Vere was a remainer & member of the pro EU “conservatives in” campaign 🤔
