  • Help with mother in law's dog (not mother in law is a dog)

About 18 months ago my remarkably dim sister in law gave my mother in law a collie cross puppy “to keep her company”. Now since the MIL has MS this was never a good idea and it has now resulted in a very pissed off, bored, unbiddable dog that is now trying to bite people (not drawn blood but is clearly not a happy dog).

I’ve done my best to help out with the dog but realistically the poor thing was never going to get the kind of exercise that a dog of this type needs.

MIL has at long last decided that she wants rid, we can’t take it as we have an eleven week old baby. No one else in the family can take it. Local SSPCA have said they might be able to take it if they have a vacancy and may end up having to put him down if they can’t rehome him due to behavioural issues.

Max was taken to the vet this evening who said that he thinks the best thing is to put him to sleep. Now that doesn’t rest easily with me. The poor bugger has done nothing wrong other than end up in an unsuitable home. He’s a good enough dog but really needs sorted out and run until he’s knackered every day.

So, the question to the STW collective is –

A- should she just have him put to sleep and move on?
B- any suggestions as to how to rehome him?
C- does anyone in central Scotland want a nice collie cross with some issues?

If the dog is healthy they won’t put him down even if they can’t rehome him.

Wish i could help more but were on the south coast.

We got our tri-colour collie of it and he had issues. Now turned in to a fantastic mutt.

The people on there really care about dogs.

You live in Denny I know the German couple who live there (Gold Passat at the turn off to Carron Valley) and I would suggest you speak to them as they are dog motivated. They have worked with dog rehoming and behavioural problems.

As is most often the case it’s the owner that is the problem. Or in this case your particulalry dim sister in law.

Dogstrust is the way forwards, they can woork miracles.

Don’t have it put down, this isn’t the dogs fault.

    Oh, and change your vet.

bigG, the poor dog deserved a second chance as it’s no fault of his own having the wrong owner BUT the quicker the dog get away from your family the better for the dog, you aleast own the dog some help and please look at all the links above as other members mentioned here and start the ball rolling this weekend.

Secondly, hope your dim sister in law will leaves dogs alone and if your mother in law need a pet, get a goldfish for her!

Poor dog had a miserable start of his life, it’s sad and I feel sorry for the dog and I hope he will find happiness with new owners if he can be saved.

They have a fantastic record of rehoming Border Collies, as I suspect he’d transform if he had a purpose in life.

That sounds like our new collie, SSPCA said we were his last chance, two months later he’s an absolute cracker of a dog, which is convenient cos thats his name.

I met Max this morning and introduced him to my three.

No signs of aggression , absolutely no sign of any rage. A happy, well behaved, lovely young dog – did really well around my three considering he hasn’t mixed with other dogs. Seemed rather biddable and responded well to being lured into a sit/down. I’m sure a that a little bit of attention on the training front would result in a very well trained dog.

Mas has mixed with children aged 9-11 without any problems.

Would make an excellent pet/trail dog in the right home.

Good to meet you, and thanks for taking the time today to have a look at him, wee bugger is currently spark out at MIL’s feet. A previously unheard of state of play.

Absolutely agree that on the basis of today’s performance he’d be a cracking trail hound. Just wish we had space / time to take him ourselves.

    Free to a good home!

be bloody carefull with a dog that bites,it mite just rip some kids face off! best thing to do is punch(not very hard more of a hard tap than a puch!!!) it on the nose if it does it to you, it WILL NEVER do it again, that dog is a pack animal not a human, it wont hold it against you..its better than putting the poor thing down any how!

That’s good to see the dog have some hope now and it looked a good dog to have, hope he will get another chance getting a new home and owners very soon. Taylorplayer you are a top guy for trying helping out the situation, full credit to you.

jenbe 🙄 I am sure given with right training and help with people who know about dogs, he will turn out a great dog, punching a dog is not the answer! do the dog experts at training centres punch dogs?? I dont think so, there is other ways to handle dogs correctly, I take it you have a dog yourself and punch it when the dog misbehave?

Someone take him – he looks perfect as a trail dog.

I think STW should do an “adopt this dog” article.

(going to ignore the punching post)

He doesn’t need to be punched, kicked, put in his place, or anything else along those lines.

Have a look at the the dog’s body language in the pics – clearly a happy relaxed dog. Look at what Graeme wrote in his post after the pics: wee bugger is currently spark out at MIL’s feet. A previously unheard of state of play. It’s just a case of the wrong dog in the wrong home, and Graeme is looking to do the best thing for the dog.

He’s a lovely little dog and will make someone extremely happy.

Well done Taylor, having spent more years than I care to remember training, working and competing BCs he sounds fine and dandy, and just a little bored (a common trait amongst Borders). It might be worth getting in touch with a local agility or flyball club to see if anyone would consider taking him on as a foster home.

Jenbe, if you’re going to consider offering “advice” please try and think before you do..

I think Jenbe was more on about a sharp tap on the nose, than a proper Mike Tyson knockout blow, but as usual, whenever dogs are involved, some on STW seem to think anyone who even thinks owt slightly negative about dogs is consummate evil and a threat to Life itself… 🙄

Dogs are, as Jenba quite rightly points out, ‘pack’ animals. What methods do you think Top Dog uses to keep the others in line? A nice quiet chat? No, they’ll use their teeth. Sometimes to very damaging effect. It’s the way of nature. Get some perspective ffs and stop being all precious. Dogs need to be ‘put in their place’, so they know their position the in the ‘heirarchy’. Spare the rod, spoil the dog.

S’why we’ve got all these out of control dogs and children these days; people too scared to dish out a bit of natural discipline.

Ooh! But for pity’s sake, won’t someone think of the children????

Folks, don’t want to appear a killjoy but the point of this thread is not about how to control a dog. It’s about finding a home for a lovely dog thats ended up in the wrong home. Can we please not let it fall into a bating match about how best to influence dogs behaviour?

@Taylorplayer – nice one. Good karma dude.

Max looks like a nice dog. I hope he finds the right home.

Your three look great BTW. I love GS’s.

So it looks like Max is heading to a dog rescue centre near Perth at the end of the week. Hate to stick him into a glorified kennel, and I’m certain it will be miserable at first but at least he’ll end up in a good home at the end of it.

Poor wee bugger has done little to deserve it but at least he’s not getting PTS.

Thanks for all the help, taylorplayer particularly. This would not have had such a positive outcome without you.

Unfortunately I have to tell you that Max is back on the market so to speak. jamie wasn’t able to accommodate him after all (through no fault of his own).

Max is hopefully heading into a foster home at the end of the week, so if any of the STW massive is looking for a trail dog I know exactly where you can get one!

I’ll try to keep an occasional update on this one until I can rest easy that he’s in a good place. He’s not even my dog and I’m gutted to see him go,

Thanks for all the kind wishes

Just a quick update on this one, Max was placed into the care of PADS in Perth a couple of weeks back. The latest report I have is that he’s socialising well with the other dogs and has made a couple of friends.

He settled reasonably well into kennel life (can’t be easy I guess) and is still available for rehoming.

Here[/url] are details of PADS if anyone is in the market for what’s turned out to be a lovely dog after all.

Thanks to everyone that offered help, support and generally had nice things to say.
