    Hi,

I have a set of FSA SL-K carbon cranks on my road bike that I bought SH and it looks as though something is missing, either an internal tube to take the compression load, or err soemthing else to prevent the cranks moving.

If i tighten down the cranks till they stop, the bearings are locked solid. if I remove the spacer then there is loads of play in the cranks.

how is ths supposed to work? what missing, what’s the trick?

    thanks

Off the top of my head

    a) the instructions are on the net, RTFM etc
    b) the axle floats axialy in the bearings, there’s a wavy washer on the NDS that stops them moving noticably.

And go buy some propper loctite bearing compound (not threadlock, not grease) and apply libberaly to the splines, otherwise they creak like no other crank ever made (and eventualy loosen and eat the splines)!

    thanks,

but it is not a BB30, it is an external bearing.

i have read several on line manuals, but it was SH and didn’t come with a manual or exact model number, so I’m not sure if the BB should have an internal bearing spacer tube, or whether it needs the spring washer.

Do you have a wave spring washer? I goes on the non drive side between the crank and the bearing cup.

I have a similar crankset but in MTB version. Didn’t come with the wave washer so I had a couple mm gap no matter how tight I did the cranks.

As above, sounds like you are missing the wave spring washer.

Unfortunately however, as you did this:
If i tighten down the cranks till they stop, the bearings are locked solid.
I suspect that you probably just killed your BB.

Don’t expect it to last too many miles before it starts clicking.

I think I have the same road cranks and if I recall correctly I think there is supposed to be an internal metal tube that slips over the crank axle and inside the larger sleeve that connects the bearing cups – if that makes sense! It’s been a while since I last had the bottom bracket out, but I seem to remember the ‘sleeve consisted of two parts.
Mine uses an FSA BB-8000 bottom bracket:

I’m pretty sure there was also no spring washer.

+1 with the wave spring washer on the non drive side, then make sure its torqued up properly.
