Headset spacers question

I am currently using my forks from my old hardtail to build up my new bike, but the steerer is a tad on the long side. I’m reluctant to cut it, as the intention is to fit it back on the old hardtail when I’ve saved up for a lurvely set of forks, so am thinking I’ll fit spacers.

The question is: are spacers only to be fitted between the head tube and the stem or can you fit them under the head tube?

Between the top cap and stem, or between the stem and the headset. Under the headtube? Erm, no…

why would you want to put them under the headtube in the scenario you describe? if you really want to keep the length of steerer then just put the stem where you want and stick a load of spacers on top. will look strange but shouldn’t be a problem.

Most definately not under, the bearing race sits here, as above either under stem which will lift it slightly or on top if the position is ok.

I’ve just worked out what a daft question I asked! Having assembled it, there is absolutely no way that this could or should be done!
