As above, the steerer on my WC rebas is to short for my new frame, a new carbon one is a laughable amount, so best not go ther. But I was thinking that there is no reason I can’t use the steerer/crown/stantions from a cheaper model.
I’m going to call TF tomorrow, but in the meantime, has anyone got an idea how much money I should be in for including a service?

I’m trying to weigh it up, merlin have new 09 rebas starting at £250, I should be able to sell mine for about £100, (or more likely keep them for another bike) so in my mind I’m thinking less than £150 would make it worthwhile. Do you think that would be realistic or ridiculous?

    Cheers.

Oh how I laughed, £470 for a carbon steerer, over £200 for a team, so with a service & postage I decided I may be better off buying a new set of forks.
I am not moaning about TF, they really couldn’t have been more helpful & friendly, more about the cost of RS spares. I’m still debating if its worth buying some reba sl’s from merlin & swapping the bits around, or just buying some new sids or fox talas.

    What would you do?

    What would you do?

How long is the steerer. I might buy them off you if the length is right.

What about buying some new Reba WC’s off ebay etc and keep the old ones for spares – but sell the crown etc.

Unless your steerer is VERY short, or the forks are totally shagged, they’re gonna be worth more than £100 EASILY!

And yeah, just buy some new Reba’s from Merlin for £250, they’ll only be about 100 grammes heavier at worst (wow, like you’ll notice that!), and will work just the same.

£470! How much were the forks originally?

blimey, i just had a look at the cost of Rock Shox forks on Merlin – 20mm revs are £640! 😯

http://www.fisheroutdoor.co.uk are the official U.K distributors/service agents for Rockshox so it might be worth giving them a call.

As for the Reba’s from Merlin – Beware of OEM’s. A friend bought some OEM Reba’s from them last year and they leaked oil from the word go so he phoned Merlin and was told to send them back. They sent some new ones and they also leaked oil but he decided not to send them back because Merlin refused to refund his postage AND charged him to post the replacement ones = £24!
OEM kit (I am lead to believe) doesn’t come with a manufacturers warranty so is left to the discretion of the dealer.

In my friends case, although when buying kit from them, Merlin were ‘Always efficient’, when it came to returning faulty goods they were ‘An unhelpful, unsympathetic and arrogant bunch of tossers from the word go’.

    Hope this helps!

Zappa, that’s worrying, surely if you pay by CC & the forks aren’t fit for purpose then your covered, even for postage?

My forks have a 189mm steerer, but there is a ‘chip’ about 8-10mm long where the hacksaw snaged when cutting it, it’s not effected them, but for me to sell then they would have a 180mm steerer, the same length CRC have for £389 in the miserly 85mm guise 😉
