  • Golfie trails – bit of help please.

Potentially off up Peebles way soon and instead of Glentress, I fancy scaring myself to death on some of the Golfie trails I’ve heard about.

I’ve got the trailforks app, but was wondering if there is a good way to link a few of the trails together and which ones would you all recommend not to be missed. Where to park etc..

I’m a reasonably competent mincer but no downhill demon.

    Cheers all.

Dave, I’d park in the car park at next to Leven water just as you turn off the main road from the town going up toward the golf course. I’d say you want to ride 3G, community service and flat white, then go scare yourself on the wolf trails or nae pleen, one of the regulars on here could give you a GPX, I’ve not ridden there enough to say tbh.

Don’t rule out the Inners side too, I’d gladly spend a full weekend just riding Angry sheep ad nauseum!.

Depending on how experienced you are it might  be better to go for a ride on the off piste stuff at Inners first. There’s loads of it ranging from nice and flowy to really steep/tech. The Golfie is a big step up from Glentress, Inners is (for the most part) somewhere in between.

    and +1 ehrob

I’d say rides the Inners side first as a warm-up if you have more than one day. Golfie trails are a bit steeper and more physical.

Add Rock & roll & Plan B to Nobeer’s list. Maybe even do them first as they’re on the mellower side of things.

Cheers chaps. I’ll do inners instead then.

Should imagine its changed a lot since I was last there 12 years ago 🙂

You could easy do both if you’re up for a full day’s riding.

Aye, I’d do both, morning over at Inners, wee spot of lunch, then up the Golfie – though that fireroad with a bellyful of lunch is a joy!

Dave, you’ll love Golfie. There are no bad trails there.

Didn’t manage to get up there in the last year, so don’t know what the current favourites are but “No social” and “Boner/Waterworld” would have been my recommendations.

The trails just down the road at Thorneylee are also worth a look if you’ve got time. There’s some mental steep stuff there (might have been”slabs and tarts”?)

Even if you ride Inners all day, you should potter up to do Flat White, it’s the easiest to get to anyway.

The only downside of the Golfie is the graft to wind yourself back up to the top every time.

I rode a couple of routes at the Golfy one afternoon last year after riding the Gypsy Glen route in the morning. I did Flat White and Repeat Offender. Both were excellent. Found both using Trailforks and a bit of advice from Neil @ Alpine Bikes as to what to aim for.

At the time I thought Repeat Offender was on the edge of my comfort zone. It did help recalibrate me for riding in Dunkeld the following day though.

I suppose once you drop into the woods you just have to commit. I felt I had no choice but to ride Repeat Offender out 🙂

As for parking, like someone else has said, just off the high street, on the road towards the golf course there’s some parking next to the stream.

Looking forward to going back again in May this year to session the Golfy and Inners a bit more.

Quite a useful thread.  I live in Austria and have a week in Scotland booked for the 3 rd week in April,  ridden Glen tress and Inners but never seem to find the off piste stuff.  Was thinking of heading to Golfie and trying to find some of the stuff there.

Is it all fairly straight forward to find, fire road climb with trails branching off from it?  Quite keen to ride something different down that way.

For Golfie – yes fire road to get most of the way up but use trail forks or someone who knows their way round to actually get to the start of the trails (fire road does pass entrances to the likes of Flat White, Community service, 3G lower, Splash & dash and a few others.

Inners is also good as mentioned above but if anyone thinks Inners is for mellower stuff then they are mistaken, try Pro Spacker or Date Night for size, easily as steep as anything at Golfie.

Can confirm, Date Night is easily as wild as most of the Golfie. Yet Golfie has more diversity and longer tracks so is my favourite.

Aye, date night and not for poofs are wicked!

From what Lowey posts about his Lakes rides I don’t think he’ll need to do any warm ups. 3G, New Wolf. Lone Wolf, and Repeat Offender, Feeding the Pony are great to get into the Golfie vibe. Boner, Liver Damage, Waterworld, Nae Spleens and No Social for a bit more challenge. Ride up on the fire road is nice and steady you leave it where it levels off and it turns into a duck pond for 15 minutes (quite ridable when not sopping).

The climb from the carpark at Inners is a kick in the balls from the start.

Thanks for all your help guys. We may have 2 days up in that area so by the sounds of it a day at Inners and a day at Golfie would fit the bill.

    Cheers.

Dave, have you considered the uplift? Really is a brilliant day, right good craic, canny beat a day descending constantly!.

Ah, bugger. You’ll have earned them climbing Ae and Golfie fireroads the 2 days before bud!. Means you can have an extra ale or 3 and not worry about the slog too!

PS – Don’t rule out a day at GT too, A day climbing on the red stuff to get to the brown stuff is a fine day, some awesome hand cut tracks there.

@andykentos most of the off piste stuff in Glentress– that I know off –is marked in trailforks and was part of the different EWS stages.  You can very easily spend a day…

I know GT like the veins on my knob but I don’t think I could find much using that map 🙂

The thing about the valley is it’s way beyond impossible to ride all the brilliant riding in a single visit, unless that visit is about 3 weeks long, and nobody can agree what the best trails are anyway. So you just have to not sweat it, and not worry too much about riding one trail in particular.

I don’t use trailforks myself. But the next time a mate whaps out his device and starts looking at red, purple and blue lines I’m now certain to see the act in a whole new light.

    😀

Really? I don’t remember Date Night being much more then steep, whereas Golfie is steep, rooty and rocky (in places). Either way, plenty to go at both sides. Pick an Enduro course like K&Q2017 and ride that for both sides.

There is some splendid steep off piste at glentress too. I especially like spooky natural, shh shh, mud and roots and ponduro. There is a great fun line from the mast down ho chi min, zoom or bust and the down to the hydro as well and for scary fun trailfairy plan (or whatever people are arguing about calling it these days)  Last time there rode 20 miles and bar a bit of the climb didnt ride anything twice.

Sounds good, guess i will use up my free trial on strava when i am back and try and download someones gpx of a decent day out on the random stuff, unless someone fancies a ride on the 3 rd week of April during the week around golfie!

I will happily return the favour if in anyone heads out to Otztal, Austria.

    Cheers

@andykentos drop me a line if you want someone to show you around the golfie/off piste inners in April (email in profile) , I’m off to China then but the OH is always looking for someone to keep him company on mid week rides.

Perfect, thanks very much, i will more than likely do that!

There are very few trails at Golfie that are that steep though tbh. But I wholly agree, the only difficult aspect is the steepness of Date Night. Golfie all that way for me!

Cheers for all your help chaps. In the end I didnt even get to Golfie as the snow was quite bad on Sunday so decided to try and get home instead.

We did Glentress on Saturday though and B-Side (trailfairy plan) was an absolute hoot in the snow, Dave’s trail was brilliant also and a great trail to finish the day.

Will be planning a return to spend a full day at Golfie soon!
