going tubeless with Nobby Nics

Before i give it a go and possibly end up with latex covering every inch of the garage floor – is it straightforward to go tubeless with standard Schwalbe 2.25 Nobby Nics? They are to go on on Mavic 719 rims. I have access to a compressor so this may help a bit with the initial inflation and have done the tubless conversion on standard tyres before but not these. Any tips appreciated. Cheers

they will inflate and seal real easy, but you might find the sidewalls will be pourous for days, the problem with such a lightweight tyre.

I’ve never successfully “Stan’s” a nobby nic, although others I ride with have. Seems to be entirely pot luck/ random

I’ve used schwalbe tyres on all my tubelss wheelsets and there have been some instances where the tyre was so baggy I thought it would never inflate! The most useful tip I’ve read and subsequently used is to hang the wheel with the valve pointing upwards when infalting. Don’t know what it does but it really helps. If you still can’t inflate with a compressor get an old paintbrush and smear a fairy liquid solution around the beading – I’ve only had to do this on one tyre so far though!

inflated racing ralphs and furious freds on stans rim tubeless no fuss with a floor pump. Its more the rim than the tyre.

if you follow the stanard STANS procedure, then from m experiances you should find no problems with those tyres and rims, worked 1st time for me.
this means you should drill the inner valve hole to increase the dia. and thus let the rubber strip seat flat to the rim. and always use lots of wet bubbles to lubricate the beading.
my other tip is that at this time of the year you’ll need to do this indoors, since when it’s this cold outside, the rubber seals are less likely to work, and worst still is the fact that fairy liquid bubbles will freeze and form ice around the rim strips instead of sealing… so keep things warm and all will be well.

Handy thread this as I’m about to attempt the same tonight, albeit with some Michellin All-Mountain’s on XC719’s. And to further complicate matters I’m too skint to use posh rim strips so I’m going down the cut-in-half BMX tube route…

I’ve been running 2.25 Racing Ralphs for over 6 months with no probs. Did my own version of ghetto/stans strips. I used the 20 BMX tubes (less than £4 from Asda for 2) but I cut them neatly to fit inside the rims as per stans. I did’nt like the look of a ridge of tube sticking out either side of my wheel. I ran a thin smear of silicon sealer around each edge of the rimm before fitting the strip.

over Christmas I ran some brand new 2008 non UST RR’s on Crossmax SL’s, they mounted and sealed fine but the sidewalls were very porous so would deflate over a couple of hours .
i ran them with two cups of stans per wheels and left them on a bucked for 12 hours per side per wheel but still no joy.

after a couple of short test rides they were better but still not 100% so i took them off.

gone back to tyres n tubes for the moment

no problem with deflating NN & RR on 819’s using wheel milk, also inflate ok with track pump, sometimes dont work first time but with some remounting and persistence i’ve never failed yet.
