Unnecessary cover of an annoying song thrown in randomly. I was looking forward to this but I’ve been distinctly underwhelmed.

    Nickc – clearly I can’t count 😉
Backing singers aren’t uncommon but what I meant was why do they need an extra instrumentalist?
They should be able to replicate the studio sound with the usual set-up surely.

Loads of bands take extra musicians on the road.

    Pink Floyd, being one example.

Dolly sure is a polished performer, amazing to see a 68 year old woman country and western singer holding a mixed crowd of that size in the palm of her hand, a consummate professional

consider for a moment a fair number of the crowds parents weren’t even born when she had her first hit 😯

With the exception of Cyanide I loved every minute.

We tuned in halfway through Cyanide, what a stinker 😆 Can’t believe it made the cut, if you only do one Death Magnetic song you do the day that never comes surely? (or at least the last 3 minutes)

Wiki tells me he is Tim Carter.

Everyday’s a school day. They still remain dull derivative by the number though.

I’ve just turned them off. It would seem that I like them recorded but live they are just a bit shit.

I think they are better than they used to be, but do sound better from the studio than in the flesh, saw them live a few years back and was underwhelmed. The seem to get to the edge without ever jumping in.

I missed the Manics’ set on the “other stage” last night but so glad i recorded it, just watched it now, loved Nina Hoss singing on Europa Geht Durch Mich, you could tell she was up for it as later on you could her spot dancing away at the side of the stage, and Nicky Wire piped up with one of the best mini-stage spiels i’ve heard over the Glastonbury weekend…

This is is usually the part of the set where I say something stupid and **** everything up…We don’t have any fireworks, no glitter…but we just sang a song together about fighting fascists in Spain. A number one record with deep rooted politics. It can be done.”

Kudos Nicky, take a bow for that one……you don’t need a stage show if you have decent songs 😀

A brilliant festival performance by the manics and how it should be done including a final tribute to richard james **** edwards, must admit to having a lump in my throat at that one as it was so easy to read james’s expression afterwards.

Watching London Grammar now, at the risk of sounding over the top Oh My **** God! …….. i know they are really tight as i’ve seen them live before but this set is amazing, Hannah’s voice is so piercing and clear it’s pitch perfect, this is a lesson for all the other female singers and artists out there who feel the need to show off their tits and arse to get attention. And Dan n’ Dot are so tight with their playing…….oh to be so talented.

edit : Disappointed that Massive Attack refused to allow their set to be recorded for tv, radio or online broadcasting 🙁

You think each band member just lays down one track to make an album!?
Not uncommon for 3/4 guitar tracks to be laid down for depth etc in the studio – hence extra musicians on the road – just wouldn’t sound ‘full’ enough.

And to echo the London Grammar comments – truly exceptional. Saw them a couple of weeks ago and watched again tonight. The closing duo of if you wait and metal and dust simply superb. Does beg the question why so many singers can’t sing live as well as they do in the studio. She (and they) are brilliant.

Like Metallica always have backing musicians hey Nick, for that ‘fuller’ sound? 😉

Predictable response. I thought you hated metallica!? 😀

S&M album – they had an orchestra of backing musicians 😉

It’s quite bullshitty sometimes… Like, the Manics started touring with another dude hiding side of stage playing guitar, his job seemed to be to take over every time James couldn’t be arsed playing a bit. Muse have a keyboard/programmer feller who at least gets to be on the stage but never gets any recognition and doesn’t get to come out for band bows and that. Biffy Clyro have an extra biffy as well who is segregated by being forced to wear a shirt. It’s not cool that…

Not trying to come across as an sneering know it all arse but a mate of mine is a producer in a certain large London studio complex and i’ve sat in on various recording sessions and you’d be astounded by the amount of overdubs, session players, session guitarists and electronical wizardy needed for so many of the so called chart topping bands to complete their studio albums, many times it is not even the actual band members who lay down the finished tracks before it goes to mix-down/mastering – the entire commercial side of the music business is built on a false pretence and whilst it pays him and a few other mates a very-very good living at the end of the day they live, love and breath for bands/acts to record such as London Grammar and the other acts i have championed throughout this thread.

EDIT : Northwind – Many of the top session players are not interested in becoming part of the band, in fact i’d go as far as saying they’d rather be kept out if it and much prefer the sidelines.

Anyway….I’m going back to play London Grammar from the beginning of their set….and then i may play it again……..

Kasabian chap in interview afterwards – what a monumental tosspot. Hopefully off his head rather than that being himself.

The worst thing about Metallica getting this kind of exposure is that people will think they’re representative of metal.

    DezB

    people will think

“People”? People who haven’t heard Metallica before? People who haven’t heard metal?
    How odd!

Most metal fans around my age probably got into it by hearing the black album, so what’s the problem with that? (I first really listened to metal when they opened the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, same sort of deal)

Metallica have always been a good metal gateway drug.

    Both and either.

It’s the same in every genre though.

The worst thing about Dolly Parton getting this kind of exposure is that people will think she’s representative of country.

The only solution is to get Manowar to headline next year.

    Yep that works.

The best thing is some people might get into country from enjoying her set. But they usually do it quietly.

You’re on a different plane to me lifer!
Good that people listen to country/heavy metal/whatever? What does it matter what other people listen to?
I thought Dolly was just another Glastonbury novelty act anyway.
So were Metallica for that matter.

    For the avoidance of doubt

    Good:

“I don’t usually listen to country, but enjoyed Dolly Parton and have started checking out other stuff”

    Bad:

“Saw the Metallica coverage on BBC, all that metal’s rubbish isn’t it?”

My moan was from someone’s comments at work this morning. My problem is writing off a whole genre based on one act. No genre can be summed up like that and it’s always going to happen but still gets on my wick.

But Metallica specifically are and were awful. 😀 Couple of gooduns on Master of Puppets mind.

Ah, I get what you’re saying and totally agree 😀
(although I’ve yet to hear any interesting metal since 1976 😉 )

I don’t get the ‘hate’ for Metallica (and there is plenty of it about it seems), when did they become so divisive? And more bizarrely, when did metal fans turn into such metal snobs? 🙂

    August 12th 1991 I think 😆

TBH a lot of metal fans just like feeling like hard-living dangerous rebels on the edge of acceptable society, it’s our inner spotty teenager, it’s not cool when your dad sees Metallica on Jools Holland and quite likes it.

It’s a bit like real ale. CAMRA fans don’t like to remember that they started out drinking stella like everyone else, and the first time they drank beer brewed from heather, or snakeskin or some such nonsense, they thought it was rank.

You say Dolly is a step into Country? Granted she’s good but she’s no Billy Ray Cirus.
