Your arcade fire… there is so much going on there. Who’s in charge? How many are just paid bods? They can’t all have input?? Can they?

Oh yes, and Régine is a multi-instrumentalist too, keys, drums, percussion, vocals, hurdy-gurdy…
There are actually extra musicians adding to the core band, doing backing brass and percussion, but that’s hardly unusual, Elbow have their strings and brass, for example, but the main Arcade Fire is a six-piece, Win, his brother Will, his wife Régine, Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara.
Richard is utterly nuts, once he gets going with a drum.
So far I’ve sen them four times, twice in the last six months, and their sets get better and better, this set-up is one of the best by any band I’ve ever seen.
I can understand people not liking a band, but saying someone like Arcade Fire or Elbow are shit, is either trolling, or wilful ignorance, because pretty much any band at that level has to be bloody good musically.
I detest the Manics, but their musicianship is beyond criticism, and apart from the auto-tuned garbage that fills most of Radio 1’s playlist, I wouldn’t call any band crap, just not to my taste.

I saw arcade fire once in the leadmill. A billion people came on the stage, they started yelling that “aaaaaAAAAAA, aaaaaAAAAAaaaaAAAAAaaaaaaAAAAA” song and one of them started hitting a soil pipe with a drum stick.

The Radio 1 DJ’s are ruining the BBC’s coverage for me, if Grimmy does any presenting then i’m gonna be needing a new telly.

    Grimmy can get to ****.

Radio 1 plays utter shite the majority of the time and now they try to display a expertise in every band and genre going.

chewkw : relatively easy if you have the £3.5k fee

    That much! Damn! 😯

I don’t have that much money to throw/invest in that sort of risk at the moment.

I wonder how much other stalls earn on average after the £3.5 fee especially those related to food or coffee/tea … 😮

Edit: just did a rough calculation and it seems rather impossible to get break-even if I sell coffee/tea at £2.50 a medium cup (assuming 5 days festival = 280 cups of coffee per day – very risky) … 😯

A standard size pitch at most festivals is 3mx3m which can be a small burger van/clothing or your usual festival tat going up to 9mx6m for those who operate a large food court type stall, this will include allocated space to provide seating. Each pitch and it’s intended use will usually be taken into account when the fee is set and the £3.5k i mentioned is for a very basic stall at a basic small scale festival, the likes of Glastonbury etc will be charging tens of thousands for a food stall/clothing/festival tat stall depending on size.

We (not me exactly, i’m just a gopher/runner for my mate who primarily organises it) organise the dance music tents (have done since festival inception) at The Wickerman Festival, we started off with approx 1500 people the first year (2001) and last year was a sell out with 20,000 folk so that’s a decent and manageable number to control.

I could go on but i’m boring myself rigid and i want to get back to blasting out Robert Plant through my sub and speakers so i’ll buggeroff now 😀

If you want to check it out have a look on youtube, i’ve a couple of vid edits up, so has Elite Force (one of our previous DJ’s).

    Somafunk,

… the likes of Glastonbury etc will be charging tens of thousands

Crikey! That’s even worst … thanks for the info.

It’s just a small stall if I were to try it out but that’s just silly money to pay up front.

I am not that into music I am afraid but I bear it no matter how loud they can be so long as the business is boosting my income. In this case I guess it’s a monopoly for some big players …

    😯

edit: The Wickerman Festival is not far from GeordieLand so let’s see if I can try that out in future. £3.5k is very expensive for a small stall holder especially if it’s for a very small business.

Caught a bit of Imagine Dragons earlier. Never heard them before, quietly impressed.

Watched a few of Robert Plant’s set, lots of Zeppelin in there.

The Wife just watched the Manics. Never really got them TBH. Saw them years ago at Cardiff Bogies, they have improved, because they were shit then.

Not that many will be looking forward to seeing them, but I’m quite looking forward to seeing how Metallica are received by the shoe gazing, hand wringing, bed wetters. 😈

I’m not really sure what to feel: As someone who has loved Metallica for many years, based on their output up to (and even including) the black album, I have actually grown to detest them for what they have become.

However, like it or not, they are representing the metal world (the music I have been heavily into for the last 30 or so years) at a distinctly non-metal festival and they will be the first metal experience for many so, in that sense, I hope they play a blinder and go down well. It won’t stop them being a bunch of *****, though.

    Hmm………Metallica?.

I’m sitting on the fence for this one, I was kind of a fan back in the late 80’s/very early 90’s (rip cliff burton 🙁 ) as i was a committed mosher and remember hitching to my first monsters of rock festival back in 87 when metallica/anthrax/wasp played (my first festival aged 15) and also the following two years when Guns n’ Roses played and there was the big crush at the front of the stage, I think i preferred Anthrax or Megadeth as they seemed to actually have fun on stage, i remember seeing Anthrax at Edinburgh playhouse supported by Helloween and Scott Ian had a skateboard platform out over the crowd so he could skate and play at the same time – how cool is that?, also loved Suicidal Tendencies but that’s digressing.

Late 90’s i was introduced to my first rave/ecstasy by friends in Camden and that’s been the ruin of my life since 😀

I’ll pass judgement after watching them.

Alison Goldfrapp has put in a good performance, very polished. Will catch the rest of Robert Plant on iPlayer later. If what I saw of the last bit of his set was anything to go by it was a cracker.
