Gin recommendations

Normally go for a bottle of Hendricks as a gift to my father for Christmas but is there any other good bottles to look at?

Bit expensive but Monkey Gin is pretty Damn special

Can be bought with matching tonic so you don’t ruin good gin with rubbish tonic. You can pick it up in a few delis and specialist booze shops as well some Waitrose

Quite an amazing place and story.

William Chase created Tyrell crisps – after taking that as far as he wanted to he sold the business and thought what else to do with his spuds/apples and so he set up a distillery. http://www.chasedistillery.co.uk/wills-story.php

Then they went and won the “Worlds best vodka” at the SF spirits awards against some 9,000 entrants.

What I didnt realise is that Vodka is the only pure spirit, everything else (whiskies, gins, brandies etc) are “dirty” vodkas.

Anyway, their gin is very good too:

Unlike most other gins, where a neutral grain spirit is simply redistilled, we press our organically grown cider apples from the family farm; fermenting them into cider, then distilling into our Naked Chase. We then re-distil our Naked Chase with eleven carefully considered wild botanicals and naturally pure water taken from the aquifer running underneath our cider apple orchards.

Sipsmith, Martin Miller’s, William Chase, Adnams all good and in Waitrose (bigger ones at least) or a decent booze shop.

Bathtub is a bit different, lots of stronger flavours which some people like, also getting better distribution now (it’s available through Ocado at least).

If you’re lucky enough to live in NW England, Booths have a superb selection of gins.

So many good ones at the moment. As mentioned above Chase do several great ones. My current favourite is Blackdown, from Sussex. So good, really nice without tonic too.

I’d never been a gin drinker, until the last gin thread, so I can’t recommend one.
I suspect, though, that this thread, like the previous one, is going to give me headaches.

I’ve bought 6o’clock gin and the tonic after a previous recommendation on STW.
I’ve just bought some Strathearn Heather rose Gin, which is coloured a bit like whiskey, cant comment yet, but will do when it arrives.

Edinburgh Gin. Just tried it, lovely, polished off the bottle far too quick!

The old mother’s ruin eh. I’d recommend Chase. Never drink cheap gin – it will make you sick as a dog.

a wise old man told me once that the quality of the tonic water is more important than the gin…?

but as above, ive noticed the headache is far more severe the cheaper you go!

Botanist Islay Dry Gin by Bruichladdich

Lovely stuff, very floral and it´s made in an old Lomond still with local ingredients. A bar near me mixes it with a splash of Lagavulin added at the end, and it´s delicious.

Botanist +1. Definately worth hunting down. Fever Tree tonic and cucumber. Mmmmmmmm.
Waitrose were doing 10% off, plus another 10 if you have amyWaitrose card, in which case I’d recommend Hendricks, Tanqueray No10, or Martin Miller.

I’ve mentioned all this before…

Botanist and Monkey 47 are my ‘higher end’ go-to gins. Make sure you/who ever drinks it gets a good tonic to go with, really does make a difference.

Edinburgh or Caorunn, thought that Adnam’s stuff looks interesting.

It turns out my local Sainsbury’s sells Angostura bitters. This is clearly a good thing.

Also, Caorunn worth a look for something a little bit different too – makes a very nice g&t with a bit of apple.

Damn it forgot to buy a special bottle the other week when I was in Newcastle. Right then need to find a good offie in Leeds on Friday morning.

Was never a massive fan of Gin, but recently started getting into it.

Went to the Gin festival in Leeds the other weekend, really liked Boxer and ish.

When I read the title I thought I could suggest Bombay Sapphire which IMO makes a great g&t.

Should have realised that stw is several degrees more niche than that…

Nothing wrong with Bombay Sapphire but this is Xmas so worth trying to get something more special.

Aldi London Dry Gin – it’s won awards. Also have heard good reports of Ophir (can buy it at Tesco)

A local brew – Sir Robin of Locksley named after Sheffields most famous outlaw is nice. I’m currently drinking One from Selfridges which has a blue tinge – not unlike anti freeze, it is very nice though

Not your grans G&T, these really do taste as good as they look.

halfway through a bottle of Single Malt Gin at the moment, it’s very nice. They also do a vodka if thats your thing.

Wine Rack on Street Lane (North Leeds) or there’s one near the central Leeds train Station, they both have nearly all of the above (and many more). The Street Lane one had Whitley Neill Gin on tasting a few weeks ago.

Gin Mare and Warner Edwards Harrington dry gin are my two favourites.

I bloody love threads like this! I’m after a nice gin for my dad’s Christmas present and have taken note of the recommendations.

Sunnrider – where’s the spanish gin bar? San Sebastian? It looks awesome!

As woody21 suggests, Ophir is bloody good. It’s got a lovely pepperyness to it.

As an aside, Chase marmalade vodka with tonic (fever tree of course,) and a slice of orange is delightful.

Cheers for all the suggestions. The botanical stuff looks good so might try that…is it too early for a gin?

Is the Langton’s any good?

Lots of interesting suggestions there, several tempting- but what about the tonic? I’ve heard this advice before but what are the better, reasonably accessible options for a good tonic without having to boil your own yak hair (or however they make the stuff)?
