Rather than take the A76 all the way to Dumfries then back up the A701 to Ae, has anyone driven the back roads just past Thornhill, to Loch Ettrick, then past Burnfoot, to Ae?

Are they ok lanes or just bumpy off-road stylee tracks?

I’ll be in a van (and it may be at night) with family.

    Your thoughts?

    Thanks,

They’re typical B roads, quite twisty but not anything like off-road. They can get very icy if the temperature drops. I wouldn’t bother going down to Dumfries.

They are pretty good driving roads. Watch out for the local boy racers though.

As above plus take a map, some turnings are not obvious.

    As Smee & Vanman says.

What I do is turn left at the cross in Thornhill and head towards Ae via Gatelawbridge, Townhead, Mitchellslacks, Loch Ettrick to Ae(OS78) Nithsdale ot google getamap. This is also a Sunday roadie route so beware a bunch of roadies wearing red/orange/yellow tops, game shooters, Landrovers, sheep and all other country type vehicles inc quads!!!!
