    Can’t see a thread?
Another part of my childhood has passed 🙁

Someone mentioned his name in a thread just the other day actually which I’d not heard for quite a while.

Everyone used to say, you’d have to be Geoff Capes to lift that, about something very heavy.

He was very prominent in childhood.

    Rip Geoff.

I will try to bend an iron bar on the back of my neck and tear a phone book in half to honour the big man tomorrow night

I bought a budgie off him as a child.
Apparently he was a lovely chap, I was too young to remember.

Remember him as a child as a notable strong man. Before that it was only Russian weightlifters.

    RIP Geoff.

Lived in my home village for a while – remember seeing him and I think Grizzly Brown  walking towards me down the main street and realising how small I was.

A couple of mates trained at his gym in Spalding, bit too hard-core for me.

As a kid I thought Geoff looked just like my dad. Turns out he was one year younger.

    That video!

    RIP

Whenever I try to bend something at work I always think of him, he used to say you have to keep the momentum to bend a bit of metal, don’t stop half way you’ll never get going again

He seemed like the very definition of the ‘gentle giant’.

Everyone commenting who knew him said what a gentleman he was

I still bloody love watching the worlds strongest man and that’s probably down to watching Mr Capes as a kid

    RIP big lad

Remember him being on TV a lot in the 80’s, World Strongest Man and such. Think I even had the computer game.

    Always came across as likeable.

    That video!

Single speed bikes but not fixed, phew!

Love the idea of elbow pads and a singlet

Remember Geoff Capes from Blue Peter with his budgerigar. RIP.

One of my childhood heroes also.  First British putter to really challenge the rest of the world aka the Eastern bloc countries.  And he did it on steak and eggs.  Top guy in all respects.

They had a piece about him on the news, apparently he still holds the British putt record! Pretty incredible.

His head must have weighed 50 pounds on its own!

With “I once bought a budgie off Geoff Capes”, you have instantly out-anecodoted anyone else, ever. Well done sir.

    This. Absolutely this.

On the subject of strong people, I read this this morning. What an incredibly strong woman in absolutely every sense of the word

I’m not usually one for grieving celebs, but GC was a real childhood icon and it’s sad to hear he’s gone at a relatively young age.

Love that cycle race clip. He had a decent engine too, eh.

“Did anyone remember the red sledgehammer for this mornings raid?”
    “Nah, we’ve got a Geoff”

He still holds the Guinness record for throwing a standard 5lb house brick!

    45m!
