Just fitting decorative 20″ plaster ceiling roses in an old house and one of the grey mains cables doesn’t have enough slack to pull though so I can connect to the junction terminals in the smaller plastic baseplate that will then connect to the pendant wires.

Is there a safe and small profile way to add 6″ of extra cable to the mains or is that a big no no. Looking on screwfix and there are things that look suitable but a bit baffled by the selection of connectors. (I’ll get an electrician in if any uncertainty but they must come across this issue and have a solution without getting the floorboards above up).

Wago connectors and wago box if your feeling flush.

2/3/4 pole Junction box if not(depending on what wires sticking out your roof)

Wago connectors are great. You have them within light fittings sometimes, or at least something similar, so effectively doing the same thing. Just exactly the sort of thing they’re for.

It’s a while since I last did one but I always just used terminal strips.

Another vote for wagos. If space is tight you can get an inline one with three through terminals

Thanks all I’ve got some of the individual wago connectors in their way. So once set up this are safe to push back up through the ceiling into the void by the joists? Would you wrap in tape as well?

what nickjb has posted are not wago’s.

I have found that with some of those cheap knock offs that the arms tend to snap off very easily.

If you have space put in a wago lighting box, otherwise tape would do

If you can’t get to it easily, it’s supposed to be maintenance free. EWago connectors in a Wago box zip tied shut meet the requirement. Or at least, they did last time I looked into it.

According to BS 7671, “every connection and termination must be enclosed irrespective of the nominal voltage”. Consider the risk of someone pulling on either end of the extension and where it would separate, which isn’t brilliant if it’s the middle of the ceiling – note that the WAGO boxes all have cable retention strips.

You can’t just wrap them in tape in the ceiling cavity, but tucked neatly into the base of the light fitting is fine. Don’t use terminal strip, it’s run its course. The white WAGO connectors in the photo above ^^ are lighting specific but still available from Toolstation etc. They’re really intended for taking the flex from a light fitting to T+E cable and I wouldn’t recommend using them to extend directly.
