1. Those DT hubs are pretty bloody gorgeous. 2. It’s great that Orange are there and that wee bike is surely going to be on every mountain bike-mad kid’s wish list? 3 that SRAM S-1000 looks cool, but electronic stuff done cheaply rarely results in reliable stuff IME 4. Must give hi-flow valves a go at some point, they look really interesting, and 5. I wonder how much it’d be if you bought every Park Tool for the ultimate Park Tool Wall.

 

Really wanted to love the Orange Whippet, it has a wonderful overbuilt look about it. But why would they ruin the retro feel by routing the one cable internally!? Noooooooo!

@nickc it depends on where SRAM have saved costs. I assume all the electronic bits are the same and it will be the construction of the mech itself that is different. Your experience of cheap rear mechs might be more relevant than cheap electronics. The conclusion might be the same. I’ve always found cheap rear mechs to be fairly reliable but not everyone agrees.

I saw the WBR two speed thing a few weeks ago and wondered when it would appear on STW.

So the big question is would they / SRAM consider selling the 2 speed backpedal change freewheel as a stand alone part? It could be at a suitably inflated price to act as a nice donation to the charity….. Any contacts you could suggest it to?

@darlobiker, yes you’re right. My fear would be that you can save quite a bit of cash electronically just spec’ing cheaper components, and less good (or non-existent) sealing. I’d have thought it’d be a SX/NX level mech with cheap electronics…Bar you own experience with lower spec mechs, it’s not a combo most would be happy with I’d suspect.

@hatter, It might be man maths, but that doesn’t actually strike me as terrible value…

What’s the big deal with internal routing? The manufacturer puts the cable in there – if you need to change it, tape the new outer to the old outer and pull through…

It’s a fair bit cheaper than buying them all separately, basically a ‘bike shop in a box.’
