Why is it that some freaks pronounce the word envelopes, on-velopes?

    Are they stupid?

Because they know about the French origins of the word?

English pronunciation is riddled with inconsistencies and exceptions, even before we get onto regional dialect

The primary reason that email was invented was to solve this issue.

    Everyone knows it’s pronounced ?ælm?nd 😡

Well it is in Cumbria at least.

That’s the way I’ve pronounced it for fifty-something years. You can come and call me stupid to my face if you like, see just exactly how far it gets you…
