So following on from a classifieds posting, why does some stuff just seem unsaleable, even though its near new in condition, & would do the job of many a same piece of new kit at 5 or 6 times the price?

Is it because its ‘old’, or overpriced, or just because its aimed at the wrong market?

There seem to be a good few bits of kit on the classifieds at the moment that just don’t sell, Ok mine was obscure, but 3 Mojo frames (one vastly overpriced) rather proves the point that most on here are happy to ride ‘normal’ bikes & not pay for for a premium badge, is STW falling apart?

Please point me in the direction of the new niche forum please 😉

one of the reasons for a premium price is often complicated technology, the kind of technology that could well do with a warranty.

Im not sure whether the “stw market” explicitly does it but you can sort of calculate the value of a warranty by the second hand price on something.

Somethings will always sell for a pretty steady price (Thomson posts I know well), an Ibis mojo though either needs to be such a bargin that I can throw the money at it or I’ll pay the extra for warratny.

On the other hand some things (Rohloff disk hubs) command a much higher second hand price because of their reputation for longeivity, and indeed like some cars in Russia* almost could be thought of having value in being second hand after they’ve been worn in.

    * some cars were so “Friday afternoon” that if you sold one second hand on which you had already replaced the gearbox and clutch it was worth more than one new 🙂

    all IMO.

I’d quite fancy an Ibis mojo, does that help?

Good point Stoner, never thought of that, but I can now see the logic.
MrNutt, why have you not bought one new, or off the classifieds then? Tightwad!

Agree with Stoner but also I don’t think you’re hitting that bigger marketplace on STW; we all might think STW is the centre of the MTB universe but its not, so to find a buyer after a specific frame is actually quite rare IMHO…and even if you do it might not be in in the right size, colour, condition etc.

So if the frame isn’t exactly what a buyer is after then they are not normally prepared to pay top whack. The price gets dropped, and dropped until eventually its cheap enough that even if it ain’t perfect, its good enough and, if its not good enough, they can flog on eBay for what they paid or more!

Is it ‘cos Mojos were a bit pricey to start with and have now been eclipsed by rivals in the perceived desirability stakes?

I’ve noticed the same thing with old-style Yeti 575s, a couple of posters have been trying to flog theirs for some time with no luck.

Worrying as I’m going to try to offload mine next week.

Stick it on ebay and you’ll find out how much it’s worth easily enough, probably more than people here would be willing to give you.

    That’s what I’m hoping anyway!

why can’t I find any of these bargain ibis’s?

I reckon people are pretty savvy on prices with eBay having such a large bike parts market
also the fraudsters on STW before Christmas have made people a bit nervous about buying off the forum, especially more pricey bits – plus with the site getting hacked, you can’t search for people’s selling history so you’re buying blind

So, to summarise, in reality STW is a fairly small marketplace, ebay & all that ensues is the way to go, God help all those that want to sell bikes 🙁

I don’t if anyone has mentioned it, but I think money is a bit tight for some at the moment….

Not talking about any specifics but I reckon a few things are over-priced on the classifieds. Just my opinion

    MrNutt, define bargain?
Surely thats the point of the post, one mans (seller) definition of a bargain is totally different to a buyers, how cheap is cheap, 1/2, 1/3rd 1/5th?
Perhaps this is a subjective POV, but when you get to 1/5th, then beyond that whats the point of selling other than having to?
