I’m adding new lights to my man cave (just single fluorescent strips). I need to add a spur for the additional light and so want a splitter box.

I went to the DIY shop and they had two flavours 20A and 30A. Anyone know which I want?

There’s only going to be two lights in total.

what else is on the circuit you plan to spur from?

Although I’d be surprised if 20A didn’t cut it for a domestic lighting system.

The garage has a double socket and two lights. That’s all. So I was guessing 20 myself. Just wanted to be sure.

Go for 3o amp, then if you need to upgrade anything its there to do it, the ampage is just the size of the terminal screws inside and nothing else.

    eg theyre thicker.

Lighting doesn’t draw as much current as sockets so 20 would be plenty.

As long as it’s rated higher than the circuit protection, then it matters not.

So, if your lights are fused correctly, they will be at 5,6 or at the most 10A – 20A junction box will be fine.

    Spuring off a ‘socket’ circuit use a 30A, it’ll have 3 terminals.

Coming off a lighting circuit use the 20A. That’ll have either 4 or 6 terminals.

start by saying not an electrician but i’d question need for a junction box at all – can’t you just go into the existing light fitting?
personally for the sake of whover comes next i wouldn’t spur lights off a socket circuit

Spurring off the sockets is fine – as long as you wire through a fused spur and fit a 5A fuse.

Or if you’ve got a spare socket in there, just put a plug on the cable to the lights!
