I’m new to the area and looking to join a club that does a bit of running as well as cycling, mainly road, but cx/gravel would be good too.

My young son means my free time is a bit limited and don’t so ideally a big enough club that has people in a similar boat.

Google is giving me all the big road clubs, like Kingston wheelers which I’ll look into, but thought I’d try here as well in case anyone’s got a recommendation.

Failing a single club to do both, if you can suggest a running or cycling group, that would be handy too!

    Thanks!

Are you in Kingston or just nearby? Depending where you are my cycle club, Sutton Velo, might be worth looking into. Meets near Worcester Park, first Saturday of the month is a more chilled out ride, second Saturday is a longer ride. During summer there are fortnightly Wednesday night social rides with a beer stop.

Works well for me with a young family as I don’t feel I need to commit every weekend or even all day to club riding.

If you fancy more info let me know, not sure eif the DM function here works atm

I used to live in kingston and ran with the stragglers, they are still going so must be doing something right.  I cycled through richmond Park last month, sat up by the ballet school to admire the views, couldn’t believe how many runners and cyclists passed me, midweek evening, sunny.

For cycling clubs maybe ask in sigma sports, I used to cycle commute to central London so had no energy left for other cycling.

Check out G!ro in Esher. Good bunch that do great rides.

Kingston Wheelers has quite an active CX and Gravel scene and is a friendly inclusive club with quite a wide mix of ability. Lots of social group rides and events as well as rides for the more serious and fitter/competitive riders. They usually organise new joiner/taster rides on the first Sunday of each month.

They also have a GoRide club attached which may be of interest to your son. It runs on a Saturday morning at the YMCA Hawker Centre, under 8’s from 10.30 and 8’s upwards from 11.30 (some children between 6 and 8 also join the later group depending on ability). Many of the parents also ride with the Wheelers and the two main coaches are both Wheelers. (disclaimer, I may be one of those coaches)

Twickenham Cycling club also are another friendly local club and London Dynamo is another club that also operates in the Kingston/Richmond area, they generally pursue a more competitive ethos.

There are numerous other smaller clubs in the area all of which like the above have their pros and cons.

    Great, thanks everyone.

I’m in north kingston, near kingston gate so v close to richmond park which is handy.

Kingston Wheelers looks good for a try out and clearly a popular one so will get along to one of their intro rides.

Stragglers also look great, though much of their training seems to be in Bushy park. Given the amount of runners round here thought there might be a club option even nearer to make it even easier to get along to, but might be too much to expect!

Enjoy the park, only tip I have is when the deer cull is on they lock the pedestrian gates at 8pm.  I was once locked in and had to climb out over the fence.  Just looked it up, 1 November start for 7 weeks.

If you fancy something a bit different (and fairly irregular ) the last Friday Night Ride to the Coast of the season is on the 20th Sept. It’s going to Essex, but don’t let that put you off ;)

As a Twickenham CC rider and coach, I’d say join the Wheelers (or us). We run beginners rides every Saturday morning and faster club rides from Twickenham on Tuesdays. But Kingston cater for children and that’s a good draw worth considering. They also have some fast runners in their club. Everyone is now riding gravel and cross has never gone away. Kingston will be running a CLCX event again this year at Bedfont lakes. Ours will not run.  We do, however, have a clubhouse in Twickenham for meeting before and socialising after the Tuesday ride (rather than just meeting at say, a corner of Richmond Park

The new KWCC kit is nice too, but ours is nicer ☺️

I was a Hare and Hound.  But just find the club that has regular club meets that will match your schedule AND a decent looking winter cross country calendar, particularly Surry League so you see some different bits of offroad

    Thanks for all that everyone.

TiRed – I did the Hillingdon cx round last year which I think was Twickenham cc? Shame there isn’t one this year but imagine it’s a lot to organise. I’ll give kingston wheelers a go and see how I get on

Thames hare and hound not far either so will put them on the list too at some point for some running company

    Thanks again
