1st ANNUAL STW INTERNATIONAL MODEL SHOW
    SUNDAY 22nd NOVEMBER 2020

That gives me a target to produce my smudged and wonky first attempt in time.

I think that’s a grand idea. Off you go 😉

Gives me time to finish a few off:
    Tamiya 1/48 Crusader mkIII
    Tamiya 1/48 T-55
    Tamiya 1/35 M48A3 Patton
    Trumpeter 1/35 BMD-4
    Meng 1/35 SAM system
And that poor 1/48 Hasegawa A-7D

I’m in! It also means that I actually have to finish the six models that I’ve got to the point that they’re 95% complete.

I’m in, I’ll try and finish my Albatross for it but if I can’t it’ll be one of those that you’ve seen before. How do you lot manage to do so many, I have trouble doing one at a time!

Any tips for taking decent pics of them with a camera phone?

At my skill level I’m going for in the dark, from underneath the table.

I get my best pictures outside with the kits on the shed roof giving me a tree line and sky.

The main subject of this model is the truck however the kit includes a corrugated iron shack as well and this is where I have started with the build. Only a couple of steps in however thought I would start a build log accordingly.

Things didn’t begin too well – I promptly lost one of the tiny crossmembers for the stool so thought I would carry out a ‘field repair’ on it which I think I have got away with! I have also never tried weathering before however if there is one kit that just wouldn’t work all fresh and shiny it’s a radiation monitoring station in the hell which was the immediate aftermath of the Chernobyl meltdown so figured I had better at least give it a go.

For the table I simply rubbed a burnt candle wick between my finger and thumb and rubbed this around. It has given it an authentic greasy, dirty look. For the stool I put a base coat of flat aluminium, then a coat of flat brown and then the grey. When the top coat was still not quite fully dried I took an emery board to it to cut through the layers of paint to give it the appearance of a battered metal stool. Overall quite pleased with how it’s turned out. A fair while to go yet though and this is not going to be a quick build. I do aim to make each model just a bit better than the one before though and I am leaning new techniques all the time which is fun :).

Looking good so far. Very realistic

Looks like I may be able to save this A-7D. Bought some paint remover, it’s cleaned up the fin & starboard side of the fuselage nicely. Now applying it to the rest of the upper surfaces. Underside of wings & belly seem ok, only one layer of paint & no plasticine residue there. Pictures once I’ve cleaned it up

    Nice one.

Got an A7 in the stash. I’ll have to move it towards the front at some point.

I’m going for the Vietnam camouflage scheme. The Hasegawa kit comes with just a couple of AIM-9 Sidewinders so I bought an aftermarket US Ordnance pack, lots of bombs/missiles/etc

Why do I do this to myself?
Making a kit that isn’t bringing me any joy and I decide to carve a wooden propeller from sheets of veneer, it looks good with the spinner dry fitted (forgot to take a pic of that).
Had a disaster with the decals as well tonight, I think I should have varnished them first as they fell apart when I soaked them.

    That prop looks lovely

I’ve bought some Camouflage Masking Putty from Ammo De mig Jimenez. Says it does not stain, grease or leave any residue. It better bloody not:

Trumpeter 1/35 BMD-4 masked off & ready for second coat of camouflage colour

The purple stuff is Humbrol Maskol, which I know & trust

That putty looks good, I might buy some. Is it reusable or is it only good for one model?

    johndrummer

I think it’s reusable. It’s still in good condition on the model, but how it reacts to paint remains to be seen

Having said that, I’ve used maybe 1/10 of the tin, if that. It goes a long way, especially if you use Maskol in between.
It’s about £15 a tin, think I got it from emodels.co.UK but could have been modelhobbies.co.uk

Cheers JD, I’ll give it a try then. Luckily I’ve got two decent model shops about 12 miles either side of me so I’ll see if they do it before I go online.

Just paid 15.99 for it in my local model shop, bloody tin is half empty! The shop is doing phone orders and you pick it up at a specified time.

What hurt more is that I also bought a Mr Surfacer 1500 black primer aerosol, £10.50!!!
I’m going to stick with Halfords primer from now on.

I don’t normally bother with primer. I used Tamiya fine primer on that A-7D, it filled in all the recessed panel lines. I don’t think I’ll be using that stuff again

I really like the Mr Surfacer primer, especially the 1200 and the 1500, I find that it doesn’t obscure any details. It sprays well, especially when well thinned with the levelling thinner.

I didn’t realise I’d paid that much for it!

I use Hycote grey plastic primer from the local motor factor. Works fine and is about £6 a tin.

Looking forward to seeing what people have been up to on Sunday. I won’t get anything finished – too busy on 1:1 vehicles at moment, but I might put up some previous builds, and, if I dare, some pictures of the stash – it’s big!😀

Me too – no kids yet so I have the FW190, Me109, Spitfire, Hurricane and Provost all for me!

    My ill-gotten gains

Super glue is sooooo much easier than poly cement for sticking fidly things together, I wish I had it as a kid

I’m already half-planning a diorama called “going solo”

I’ve also gone and ordered a cheapo ebay airbrush and some vallejo fillers/thinners/varnishes/colours I need that the kits don’t have (mostly for painting the pilots), damn it!

Go for it. I’ve had a directive from The Committee and the rules are as follows: Pfff… Whatever.

Black camouflage putty does indeed seem to be reusable. I’ve just peeled it all off my BMD-4 & rolled that up into a ball, which seemed to get rid of most of the paint. It’s now back in the tin

Finished the hut of the ICM Chernobyl Monitoring Station kit. Never painted figures before and never attempted weathering etc so this entire build is about learning new techniques and trying out a few ideas I’ve had.

For the ‘broken’ window I CA’d a broken screen protector behind the main Perspex and then used some balsa to make to repair. I also added a bit of balsa to the tops of the front and side panels to add a bit of depth.

Finally a bit of ash from the coal stove on the roof to simulate the ash and fallout from the reactor fire.

To weather the panels I airbrushed them dark grey first and then in the light grey as per the colour chart but made sure coverage was uneven. The I mixed up a quick wash using brown and black with a good dose of thinners and quickly dipped the panels and the windows in and then let it drain off and dry.

On to the truck next 🙂

Amazing! Can’t wait to see the truck! My mate has a couple of old Russian trucks, one of which is a Zil decontamination unit, basically a big tanker with mobile shower fittings. It’s a very clever and robust bit of kit, not at all what you’d expect from the regime that gave us the Lada!!😀

Just accidentally bought a £4.99 FW190 from Aldi. Ooops.

Everyone ready for the Model Show tomorrow?

Yep, finished my Albatross DV yesterday and just got to take a couple of pics now. I need to get outside and take them but it’s too windy here (it’s always windy in the fens!), finding somewhere bright enough indoors is hard.

Good job on that hut, I like it!

I’ll start the thread tonight then it’s ready for morning.

Bought the HP Jet Provost last weekend. Actually a nice little kit despite some filler being needed.
