Child’s full face lid

Im after a full face lid for a 5 year old, they’re at BMX tracks quite a bit so seems the best way to go, they’re borrowing xs at the club at the moment

Severn seem ok, any others I should be looking at?

Sweajnr is in ixs trigger. It’s not cheap and I don’t know if bmx has additional requirements.  It is however very light which personally I thought was important given neck strength at that age

I found there weren’t many kids specific helmets out there so just got a smaller size adult one.

I’ve struggled a bit with this one.

For me full face are risk Vs benefit.

Clearly they protect face more.

But they also hugely increase rotational forces on an impact, often weigh a lot in ratio to a child’s head, and I’ve seen more than a few wobbling about due to poor fit.

I got ours full face as they started racing as teenagers/maybe around 10/11 years old.

not sure if this is of any interest but I have a brand new in box XS bell sanction that you can have for a few quid plus the postage.

Bought for my 9 year old but was way too small for him so never used.

Another recommendation for Bell Sanction, come in XXS and pretty light around 700-800g.

I came along to post Moabs advice, but I would have put it so tactfully. I’ve always winced seeing small kids in oversized full face helmets.

Personally I’d be thinking long and hard before putting a 5 year old down something that truly justified a full facer.

7idp for my lad, BMX  racing so required, saved his face a good few times. We see some pretty big slams every now and then on the track

A full face helmet has helped prevent more serious injury with my son on two occasions so far – neither were occasions where a full face was ‘truly justified’.

Once on the family green trail at Sutton Bank where his foot slipped off the pedal, had a wobble, and went off the side of the trail face first into a tree. The second was on a pump track where he had a head on collision with an older kid going the wrong way – the full face stopped the other bikes handlebars making contact with his face. Both would have been far worse had he been wearing his half lid.

He chooses to wear his half lid most the time but tends to prefer wearing the full face in the winter as it’s warmer. We make him wear it when on the pump or BMX track though.

Just for reference the Abus Youdrop FF is closer to 400g – I was concerned about the weight of small adult lids.

O’Neal Backflip helmet. Not too heavy, fits a 5 year old, not very expensive, has a Fidlock buckle that kids can do themselves. Ours was about £50 last year. His twin sister has an XS Bluegrass helmet, but no idea what model as was 2nd hand (only turquoise and pink helmet I could find).

We got ours full face helmets at the age of 5 because: 1- it’s compulsory to have full face, gloves and long sleeves and trousers at the BMX club we regularly go to; and 2- both the twins have had rather tasty face plants and offs on pump tracks and gravelly corners on easy descents. Their older cousin wears one for BMX as well so they think it’s cool.

Thanks all, some good points, I’m same as ZC, we”re attending BMX clubs regularly where FF is mandatory along with gloves and full leg cover, when we’re not at a club day we’re usually at tracks or pump tracks so I’m ok with it. If we’re going to potter along some fire road I’ll stick there usual lids on, I’m betting they’ll be too hot in the summer too.

I’d have grabbed that Bell Squealer but I’ve got twins and this stuff, gloves, bikes etc has to be the same otherwise there’s arguments, having measured both have 54cm heads which is getting on for small adults

We got a bell full face passed on as a mates son had outgrown it.

First time my 4 year old wore it was on his scooter to school. He hit a tiny pebble and went chin guard first into tarmac. He’s not amazing on the scooter, I think he had was messing about ( he’s 4) and had his weight well over the front

It’s a bit over kill and very hot, but perfect as it gets colder.i was very happy he had persuaded my wife to let him wear it, I wouldn’t have.

Those 100% status helmets are a good price! somehow my child is already out of youth and into potentially an adults small!

EDIT: Shipping is £33 from the USA, Thanks Brexit… Not so much of a good price now!
