I am beefing up garage security.  I am looking at chains, locks and anchors.

One you get up to c.13mm chains they are bolt cropper proof, but an angle grinder will go through them in 10 seconds.  You can then pay about double to go up to a 19mm chain which will resist an angle grinder for about 20 seconds.

Question; other than 10 seconds, which in a garage security scenario seems irrelevant, is there any merit in getting anything over and above bolt-cropper proof?

TBH most 13mm chains aren’t cropper proof, not in the real world- that might take you past easily concealable ones at least

In my opinion for a garage no (in 99% of cases before someone comes with a weird outlying case ?)

spend the efforts preventing access to the garage in the first place, and then any lock is a hindrance once in there momentarily. If the outside security is good and they’ve spent 5 mins in view of houses/neighbours then another 10 seconds in the garage hidden is nothing. I’ve set it up so it’s hard to get in but if they did it is noisy as hell, inside and out. At that point locks are to stop a grab and run.
If their brazen enough to hang round at this point I’m guessing they are very very determined and are after more than “a bike” and there’s other shiny shizzle or bikes worth big money and you’ve been specifically targeted.

    nowhere is safe.

the thing to do is to slow them down as much as possible.

i have this.    i value my bikes more than my car.  so the cost is no problem

If you’re looking to slow down angle grinders, then I think the only option on the market for anchors are the Hiplok products

Insurance, be less attractive a target than the other guy, and/or don’t keep them in the garage. A sufficiently determined thief will find a way, there’s tales on STW of people having their garage roof removed.

I think make the garage hard to get into, as an alarm so it’s noisy whilst they’re in there just to add a bit of pressure, then multiple locks and ground anchors. I think a d lock with a 16mm or thicker shackle is bolt dropper proof – and will need 2 angle grinder cuts. Put 2 locks and 2 ground anchors for each bike and only someone really determined (and coming equipped) is going to get a bike. If each bike has its own pair of locks then it’s going to take longer to get each bike too – rather than using 1 long chain.

Olus make sure you’re insured – and try not to let people see what bikes you e got in the first place. I pack the car to drive anywhere riding – bike is the last thing on the roof, and the first thing off when I get back.

Thats all you can do – if they really want your bike they’re going to take it.
