we’ve done tool walls and tool cabinets to death but what is everyone using for their bike related tool box that goes in the car on trips?

Ive got my bike related tools and small spares like cables, pads and quick links all in a spare Ikea plastic box so they are separate from my car, plumbing, electrical tools etc – this is fine but i’ve been caught out in the past when ive borrowed a tool from the bike kit for a domestic DIY job and then not had it to hand when ive needed it so better organising is needed

ive been suckered into https://www.youtube.com/@ShadowFoam so now thinking about a halfords modular box like this https://www.halfords.com/tools/storage/tool-boxes/halfords-advanced-modular-tray-storage-case-735997.html  to match my socket set and custom foam inserts for everything. i know in my gut this is massively overkill but lets be honest, thats unlikely to stop my spending over the odds for something i dont need to solve a problem thats borne of my own lack of organisation!

so – whats everyone else using to keep their “car park bike tools” organised and together?

If it’s just getting lobbed in the car and you don’t want something really swish, a builders bucket with a bucket tote (Makita do a couple) is really good. Internal and external pockets for tools, big hole in the middle for larger stuff like a Airshot/spare tyre/rubbish.  Plus you can lift the tote out and use it as a bucket :). I use one at work instead of a toolbox.

PS I’ve had one for years, just broke the black bucket and found a red one in the garage. Much better as you can see everything in the bottom!

I need to do the same as the OP but using 4-5 layers ideally. Along with a deeper box of course.

I take everything, i do mean everything. From a bearing press kit, derailleur hanger tool, approx 50+ bearings, 15 sets of pads, 2 sets of brakes, Shimano bleed kit, SRAM bleed kit, 3 rear mechs, 2 sets of pedals, 2 sets of grips, cables, inners, outers.

Aldi tote bag. Gets lifted from the garage shelf into the van so never have to worry about not having something

2 sets of everything. 1 lives in garage, 1 lives in van. Impossible to forget anything

    (Well, not impossible, but tricky)

I got sick of bike tools being all over the place or never knowing which drawer to look in when I’d managed to put everything away so now I have a metal cantilever toolbox that moves to where I’m working on the bike (small rammed garage means that’s preferably outside in summer) so any time I go anywhere in the van with bikes I just take the box. Contains everything I need and nothing I don’t

I have a tool roll which hangs on the wall at home and then gets rolled up and chucked in the car as needed.

We’ve got a Planet X tool box that lives in the van permanently. Covers most jobs. If its beyond that, i’m more than happy to find a LBS. I managed a frame swap in a campsite 10yr ago whilst on holiday with the shop fitting the headset for me.

2 of those fold-down plastic crates. One has tools (I’ve got more tools including doubles of most of these in the garage so they don’t get taken out and not returned), lube, etc in; the other has a big chunk of my cycling outer clothes in so I can pick and choose when I get there, and a warm jumper and some lightweight trousers for after the ride. Sling ’em both in the boot and I’m pretty much sorted.
