Squirt some release agent such as WD40 in from the non-drive side leave to soak over night and try tomorrow.

If still stuck and you have access to a vice place the BB tool in the vice and use the frame as a lever, you may need help to hold it square and level.

Else take it to your LBS

Best of luck

Dunno what BB is in there other than it's probably Shimano. Drive side has a steel ring and the other plastic. Got the plastic one off no trouble. Spindle is square tapered

Will try the WD. It does'nt help that the grooves that the removal tool slots into arent very deep and it keeps slipping off

what ever you do try Kona TC's 1st as it will help then go to the pub and wait until tommorow..

I assume that you've used a spined tool to remove the non drive side and the drive side has frozen in place and that youve been using a large spanner on the tool blah blah blah

in which case put the tool in a vice and try by using the frame as it will give more leverage

again i'm assuming the cup is steel then you might have to use a more brutal approach either cut 3 slots inside using a hacksaw (obviously aking care not to cut down to the threads then try again and it will collapse the cup

or

again if it's steel go nuclear and Mig weld on a bar to the cup and use that as a spanner (longer the better) mind your paint......

or if its an alloy cup in a steel frame use Caustic Soda to rot the cup

I took the one out of my old hard tail the other week, it was in the same state as yours. I squirted a load of wd40 inside from the other side, left it for a while then, used a large socket and long handled torque wrench instead of the spanner. Come straight out... 😀

Use an old crank bolt with washers etc.... to bolt the BB remover to the BB, this stops it slipping as much and mashing the splines, then depending on whther it's a socket BB remover or spanner one get the biggest bar you can and go for it till it feels like you'll rip the chainstay off!

I worked one that was stuck in 2 directions, the first night I could move it about 2mm either direction then a few WD40 soakings later it just started to come away. Shocking wuth a large hammer can work too

as tails eluded to ....

I take it you know it's a left-hand thread?
i.e. needs to be turned clockwise to remove it

As grizz says, bolt the tool in. Use the biggest spanner you have, and an extention tube if you can. As uplink says, clockwise to undo. Lean the bike against a wall while holding it on the front brake, carefully stand right foot on spanner then exert force sharply downwards. If that don't work, your leg will probably break, so you can't ride you're bike anyway. Sorted.

This happened to my allmost new Royce bb after i fitted it to my New Pace frame, without having the threads cleaned first.

[img] [/img]

You might be able to do the same...That is hammer the axel out, it is a bonus if the bearing goes with it and cut the cup out. You can tell when the hacksaw blade is just touching the top of the threads in the frame. Make 2 cuts (as if to take 1/4 out) then you should be able to hammer ( with a large flat screwdriver)the 1/4 piece inwards and loosen it. The rest should come away easy.

It will take maybe an hour but it is very satisfing when done. This one was by my mistake but i have done it before with really old ones as well.

Great thread, this kind of info is priceless to home bodgers. I broke the plastic thingy on a shimano BB a few weeks back and gave up trying to get it off but its coming off tomorrow....

What's the story with coke down the seat tube and why not diet ?

fuok me stoney are you serious?

You can tell when the hacksaw blade is just touching the top of the threads in the frame.

OH MY GOD!
i would never EVER put a hacksaw anywhere near the threads on my BB shell. ever.

coke rots things ,non diet is a bit more agressive
old blokes stuff
most seat tubes have a hole to the bottom bracket so a resavoir of the stuff is there
this is better on steel frames
works on seat tubes too
dishwasher powder & cillit bang also "new" wonder chemicals

Yep, i`m serious.... done it at least 3 times now. You just have to be really careful when getting close to the frame threads and there is a different sound when they meet. That does NOT mean the threads are damaged cause you have NOT actually cut into them. What was a problem with the Royce one was that one side of the bearing ring stayed in position and being hardened, it made it more difficult to cut. Then cause there is only the threaded portion of the cup left, it breakes away with a tap.

Seriously, if you are carful the bb threads will not be damaged.

I've hacksawed BB's out before now but it is an absolute last ditch attempt at recovering it. I'd take it to a shop before I'd try that.

It's been soaked in WD40 all night and day and still wont move ! Tried the biggest socket wrench i've got and even a impact driver with the removal tool on the end.

It's big hammer time !!

Mate of mine has an air compressor with airgun + BB tool.

100% success rate on stubborn BB removals (takes approx 2 seconds) 🙂

It's out ! 🙂

Just wanted a crack on the socket bar to break the seal.

Does anyone know if you can buy just the grey plastic ring off the non-drive side for a Shimano UN-52 BB ?

Check recent posts, somebody on here yesterday had been given two to fit on an octalink BB before he found they were different, he may pass one on.
