Bike shops in Manchester

Off to Manchester at the end of the month for the weekend, to watch a gig, any good bike shops in the city centre worth popping into ?

Edinburgh bikes is good but abit too far out of the centre.

if it’s at the academy (any of them), then edinburgh bike co-op is on the same road, about half a mile further away from the city centre…

Er, there are no decent bike shops in the city centre.

You might wish to visit GBH – fixie kids in the Northern Quarter – or Bicycle Doctor – workers co-op in Rusholme (land of shonky curries).

The gig is Keane @ the MEN arena.

edinburgh = rubbish, go to harry’s if you want to be ignored, GBH if you dont have gears, Evans is easily the best shop in manchester, by far.

Evans on Deansgate was pretty rubbish I thought – the one at Chill Factore seemed better.

Oh yeah, and Keane, eh? Shame on you.

North West Mountain Bike Centre (run by Andy Kyffyn, Steve Peat’s ex mechanic)

I’ve only ever been to any Evan’s shops in London, but would put money on the 2 I mention above being better than Evan’s 😉

North West Mountain Bike Centre is a ways out of town (Cheadle), but in my humble opinion is by far the best Bike shop in the North West.

They’re a really good bunch, know their shit and you can always work a deal if your buying a few bits off them.

Manchester Trev, whats the score with Evans, went in to look at a 2009 top fuel 9 and the geezer said they dont stock any Treks even though you advertise them in your mags and web. He said if I wanted to have a look he would get me one but I had to pay £20, I would get this back if I bought it 🙄 (Trafford centre branch)

bike shak and NWMTB, great shops, but not in manchester….

other shops i mentioned, not been in since i started at evans, so they may have improved, like i said not been in for ages, never needed to…

and the deansgate store dont stock spesh or trek due to other shops in the area, but can sell them, and you get your deposit back even if you dont like the bike, there is no obligation to buy.

I have to say that I quite like Evans on Deansgate. They’ve always been OK when i’ve been in but i’ve never bought anything more expensive that sun glasses off them – Specialized San Remo at a very reasonable £24.99.

I like Cookson’s, but they are 5 miles north of the city centre. Small shop, good friendly service, not let me down, don’t treat me like i’m some sort of dinosaur, seem to know what they are talking about etc etc.

Harry’s is great, the only decent one in the city IMO.

Harry’s is ok, good for proper track stuff, Cervelos and clothes. Evans is Evans, reasonable stock, not as cheap as some indy shops, staff are pretty helpful in Deansgate and Chill Factor (moreso than in London shops). Edinburgh Coop is behind both of these, but they have a Fixie Inc cross bike in stock so I like to go down there and perv once in a while 🙂
