Front wheel felt loose today so I’ve have the end caps off the hub and the bearings feel rough as a badgers behind. Given they’re less than a year old I’m dubious at replacing with ‘standard’ DT Swiss replacements so what’s the recommended bearing of choice?

The aftermarket ‘red’ DT bearings are the same grade as the ones that come in 240 hubs so are not the same as the stock 370 ones.

You also know they’ll be within tolerance and won’t damage your hub so for £12 each I’d use those.

Ah, I’d just assumed that as my existing bearings are red they’d be the same.

    Otherwise Enduro Max?

Enduro max are designed for use in suspension pivots that see a lot of sideways force but only rotate a small amount.

They’re great for their intended use but they’d be very draggy in a wheel.

There’s a little product support widget on the support section of the DT site that will tell you exactly which bearings you need, I’d try goggling the code it gives you first

Enduro Max are not for rotating components like hubs but are designed for oscillating ones like suspension pivots.

Once you spec the size, you can order good bearings, or cheap bearings.

Someone like kinetic specify a greater grease fill and a thicker grease which helps on slow rotating dirty bicycle components

Thanks, makes sense.  Ive used the DT Swiss site already to get the bearings.  Sounds like their ones are worth a punt then.

If they were mega bucks then it may be worth looking elsewhere but the price DT ask for the 240 grade ones is not unreasonable and you know they’ll fit and won’t invalidate your warranty etc.

I replaced the bearings in my rear wheel on the winter bike last autumn as they were a bit rough. Couldn’t buy the proper ones (Vision were out of stock), so bought the right size ones individually off Amazon.

I’ve just had to replace both main axle bearings as they’d both developed a lot of play in not a lot of riding (maybe 3000 km). Sadly, I’ve replaced them with the same ones as the MoQ was more than I needed.

Never seen bearing fail like that, nor so quickly..

For reference these were the bearings:

I just assume they were made of cheese as I can’t really see why they would fail so quickly.

I bought a load of sourcing map ball bearings for my XT hubs which I haven’t used yet – after reading that I might bin them…🙄🤷‍♂️
