    hi all –

looking at building an ultra cheap commuter mtb, and i was considering one of the unbranded steel frames on there for about £20,

now im not expecting great things obviously, but i was wondering if anyone had any experinces? can they be taken off road at all?

cool, looks ok! thats pretty identical to what i had in mind!

but can they take any hammering?

How much hammering is a commuter going to get to be honest and for £20 quid its not exactly a fortune to replace if it does fail.

hom much is your body worth? If it fails and you mash your face in a crash is that worth £20?

Up to ringinlow village, accross Houndkirk moor to Fox House, cheeky bit down to Grindleford, then road from Eyam to the Anchor – Home

I’ve got a slicked-commuter-singlespeed-drop-bar type thing that I built with one of those bankrupt steel frames and I have to admit I love it. The frame is a wee bit heavy compared to an Inbred but has a really nice ride and I find myself thinking of excuses to use it. Mine is a Saracen frame, but different to the one pictured in that thread.

ah that would mean i miss the road between bradwell and tidsa – is that right? thats the bit i dont fancy, big trucks and steep hills dont go too well in my eyes!

where in sheff you starting – just memorymapped it from ringinlow village at 12.5 miles – got it saved as a gpx file so you could upload into google eart for a look

Unless its really badly welded, if it fails it’ll just bend. Worth it for a light-offroad commuter IMO.
