For a holiday like, not a biking thing just a trip for 2 adults that like to see a bit of history/culture and maybe do a bit of snorkeling.

    Cheers!

Yes its odd that a country with such a history has taken to producing muesli

Maybe they’re trying to keep up with currant affairs?

Yes… I was young and everyone had guns. Petra is pretty cool. that is all I know.

Yes! Amazing place. For snorkelling your only option is Aqaba in the south. Eilat (Israel) is across the water and mega busy, but Aqaba is quiet. We had a day snorkelling (beautiful coral) there on a beautiful quiet beach, drinking cocktails brought to us by the waiters, while the Royal Jordanian Air Force aerobatics team practiced over the water.
Petra is the most amazing place I’ve been, you’d need a couple of days at least to explore it.
Amman is a really cool city, we wandered around it for 2 days seeing the many sights.
Loads of amazing places like Wadi Rum, Kerak, Jerash…
Food can be a bit hit and miss though. All the best restaurants are Lebanese.
The place would be AMAZING for Mountain Biking too. Not sure if anywhere does it.

If you’re flying there, make sure you get exit seats for the extra legume.

I’m always bowled over by people milking the puns… they probably got spoon fed them as children.

I have been to Amman quite a few times. I like it there – friendly people – apart from the hotel where I stayed was hit by a suicide bomber shortly after my return, but they have not had much of that since. I would still go again. I expect Amman is a world apart from anywhere where you can go snorkeling though!

Did an 8 day biking holiday there with Explore 3 or 4 years ago (not sure they still do it) which started overlooking the Sea of Galilee and Golan Heights in the North and ended up at Aqaba on the Red Sea and including the Dead Sea, an overnight in the desert and Petra. Really fabulous holiday and a fascinating country with loads of history.

Petra is one of the most amazing places I have been and needs a full day, or preferably two days, to do it justice.

Philby – What was the riding like? Putting aside what would be the small issue of skidding round a world heritage site, I just remember thinking Petra looked like it would be a perfect place to bike.

Riding was pretty good. Roads were relatively quiet, and lots of variety between Jordan valley and desert areas. Heat was one of the biggest challenges as there is little cover – cycling to the Dead Sea, although flat, was exhausting. We were riding bottom end Giant hardtails which were OK, but the ideal bike would be a robust tourer or cyclo-cross bike.

We did one amazing swoopy road descent which seemed to last about 20 minutes. It was also quite unusual cycling along and seeing a camel train in the adjacent desert.

Agree about Petra being an ideal place for mountain-biking.

I’m in Jordan and have been here for 18 months now.

As a short term holiday destination it has a lot going for it, especially on the history side.

xcgb if you want more info I am happy to provide it.

If anyone is visiting Amman and wants some biking, we are out every weekend. As surmised above, the riding is excellent. Get your climbing legs on though, it’s far from flat.

    Neither photo is in Amman.
