hi all, booked some flights for split / dub return next summer July, will travel by ferry /bus etc. no car

which are the best booking sites, in the past not been for years i mainly used booking.com, just looked at airBnB and that site seems alot cheaper, but is it full of chancers, once confirmed how likely are they to cancel.

booked a stay in Vis, last night with 24 hour confirmation (booking.com) and it got rejected, today this accom is still on airBNB to reserve/pay in full,

so i booked another small apt central vis this morning, payable 30 days before, they have confirmed the booking.

this is still up on airbnb at a cheaper price,  i’ll check again tomorrow to see if its gone .

never used airbnb and i know croatia can be a pain, meeting people who say apartment fully booked so they walk you to another place etc.

i need to book korcula / dub

advise on accomodation appreciated and or best beaches, can get to by boat/bus/taxi

plan is vis/ korcula/dub over 8 days, I’ve been to croatia a few times, [so happy to pass sibenik/split/bol/hvar et al]  so plan 1-2 nights max in dubrovnik  thinking hotel with pool ideal for last day flight early evening.

We stayed here in July: https://www.booking.com/hotel/hr/sunrise-apartments-2.en-gb.html

Basic, but recently refurbished and clean. Host was friendly and useful. There was a space to park our hire car (which is rare in Cavtat). Bit of a walk down a hill to the town, reflected in the price we paid. On the glide path to Dubrovnik airport.

Went in July, it was hot as balls. Got the boat to Dubrivnik, nicer than the bus. Apparently, don’t bother driving to Dubrovnik.

I can second some of that. We did bus from Dubrovnik to Split a couple of years back, was OK but unless the sea is rough, the boat will be better.

Dubrovnik Old Town is pretty small, hot and heaving from dawn till dark during the season, we did an apartment for a few nights, then another few nights in a modern hotel a short taxi ride away on the coast. That could be the better option, particularly if you fancy having a decent pool.

Not many beach options in Dubrovnik itself, there are some ‘beach club’ type places. Probably best to get your fill of beaching on the islands, or take one of the boat tours that stops at the little hidden coves where you can swim.

For a “cheap” lunch in Dubrovnik Old Town (which is generally crazy expensive), I’d recommend Panini Bar Franco Romano, really nice Focaccia sandwiches for €13 or so.

Split last year for two weeks. Airbnb was fine just out of the city. As is the town if you keep away from the 300m ground zero zone of the cruise ships during the day. Has a great brutalist set of buildings a short walk from the centre. Oppo side of the harbour has a nice pizza restaurant. Buy tuna for all of the cats in town. And being tourists we took a coach tour to Mostar, which was sobbering as we visited the genocide museum. Indeed my 17 year old son said Mostar was the highlight, and he would go back. My son, bless, has the cultural sensitivity of our cat, so it must have been an interesting place.

yeah i went to mostar the first time i was over there really interesting place, bridge divers, bullet holes  and a strange religious site on a day trip from dubrovnik.

looks like i’m going to miss the ferry to vis so likely to have 5 hours to spare in split till the 4pm ferry.

i’ll check out the focacia’s, had some ok / dreadfull meals in dubrovnik before, the nice courtyard restaurant may as well hae served canned heinz seafood pasta, absolutely rank .

will try find a restaunrant i’ve been to a few times,

best conversation i’ve ever had the pleasure of overhearing was going on behind me

. a guy in a blazer who sounded like Boycie with his wife and another couple, he’d mentioned rolex’ , the wife’s rolls (sic. royce) but he’d prefered the german car, then a conversation on to his children, he then asked what the dutch couple if they had kids and what did they do, oh he’s a DJ, to which Boysie rambled on about DJs not being musicians, and how can he earn a living,

the dutch lady replied,  oh he seems to have done well for himself and he actually produces his own music and plays sold out gigs all over the world to 10k+ people, travel first class all paid for. just misses home..

Are you flying into Split and out Dubrovnic?

We have done Split then out to Kortula and Hvar by boat. Then another trip Dubrovnic out to Miljet by boat.

I think on your itinerary you’ll be best off doing the whole thing by boat

Both times we went in October which may have affected our experience

All but one of nights was airbnb. In the first trip we were dubious that the places could live up to how they looked in the photos. On the second trip we were way more confident. Had some really great stays with good hosts. Accept Kortula, but we new it weren’t be great when we booked. I think we were only they 36 hours. If i was going again I’d accept no sea view add get an airbnb in the old town

Our first night in Dubrovnic we stayed in a little air conditioned apartment up one of the steep alleys. We really liked it. Our last 3 nights were in a little flat about 1 mile South from the old town. Amazing views across to the old town and Lockrum Island

There is a small gritty beach in the way into town. I prefered swimming from the rocks beneath the walls of the old town

Croatia in general doesn’t have many beaches.

Split airport is one of the nicest airports I’ve been to. There is a beach a 10 min walk from the airport

We stayed on Korcula , lovely little place. I’d definitely recommend island hopping n all the ferries
