    Bikes can be ridden in salt water conditions fine if prepped up in the build.
    4″ tyres on 80mm rims are ideal for most fatbike conditons year round. 5″ tyres on 100mm rims i would go for if you have a lot of dune riding or want to go rock crawling at low tide where they excel over a 4″ bike.
    Dunno where folks think 170mm rear hubs are going to faze out!, Roholf for one brought out a 170mm IGH.
    The Surly Wednesday is a budget Fatbike but uses latest geo for optional Blutos but takes 5″ tyres on 80mm rims with a regular threaded 100mm BB.
    Any frame that can take an optional 5″ tyre on 80mm rims is a good frame as covers all options.esp if it also takes 29+ or 27.5 B+ in smaller sizes 🙂

    @coastkid sorry to hijack but if I wanted to plod round some East Lothian coastline, can you give me any pointers to where to start from. It’s not an area I’m particularly familiar with despite being relatively close. email might be better.

    Here you go molegrips, that old frameset and wheels have over 11,000 miles in 7 or 8 years use, and still rolling! 🙂

    Big tyres throw up a lot more spray than regular MTB tyres – IME bearings and drivetrain need a lot more attention and why mudguards are more of a necessity and worth bearing in mind if looking at suspension.

    Is there anyone out there who can compare directly something like a Surly ICT with something like a Canyon Dude, both in 5″ guise ?

    the one obvious difference is 4.5kg difference in weight.

    you must loose some of the ‘plow through everything’ with the Dude but gain in climbing & using it as an all day bike.

    Not ridden a dude but id say 1kg at least in the tyres, 1kg in the steel (1.5kg!) vs carbon fork, the ICT has 100mm rims vs 80mm on the Dude (the ICT ops has 80mm but don’t know which one you are comparing).

    Stick a bluto and same tyres on them and prob not as much difference when riding, geo pretty similar though sizes do not line up exactly as small to large in the Dude is a big jump in reach and surly has a XS, S, M, L and Xl for same range, plus an XXL.

    That’s quite some reduction (£700 off the ICT). Is that normal for fatbikes at this time of year or are they dumping stock for some reason?
