24hr events and lights

More specifically back lights.

I’ve done a few 24hrs events now and i seem to be seeing more back lights on in the hours of darkness and i just don’t get it (it annoys me because i find it distracting catching the light out the corner of my eye while concentrating on singletrack at 3am, but that’s not the point). THere’s no such thing as photon push and with most riders running 300+ lumens on teh front they should see you so, why?

They do it specifically to annoy you and you only.

You’d soon complain if you ran into the rear of them. Admittedly they could use a low-brightness solution.

They don’t bother me in the slightest, in fact I rather like them.

At D2D last year they asked for people to switch off back lights IIRC. Don’t have a problem with it myself, as long as they’re not flashing.

Coffeeking, do you really think given the lights most people ride with on the front that riding into someone is gonna happen? If so unobservant then nothing will stop that kinda crash.

I’m just curious as to the reasoning, although i did see one lying by the trail side at the weekend flashing away to itself and by some degree of skill managed not to crash into it, must have acyed like some big magnet.

I find it strangely comforting watching red lights recede into the distance at a speed I can never hope to match.

and if you see a cluster of them some distance in front you know there’s been a crash…

The counter to that is that they give you something to chase.

They irritate me as well. Little Knogg single LED ones and that type are ok, but I’ve been behind some monster rear lights that almost burn out youre eyes.

kev – there are plenty of very unobservant people out there. Just try commuting, even WITH 1watt rear lights on the bike, 100W of halogen lighting at the front of the car, people still manage to collide. And thats when the person following isnt exhausted from 23 hours of pedalling in darkness.

Aye i know. I reckoned it was a “i’m here”, but some of them are pretty bright. THere were 4 led cateyes on at 5pm at the weekend. Mind you not as bad as those coming against the flow of traffic on “full beam”.

They are however nothing like as bad as the dumbf*ck that decided to walk out infront of me just as a was getting up to speed on the first climb. Cheers for that. I really appreciated the extra effort.

I don’t mind the little red lights. Big ones are can be a nuisance if they’re mounted low.

I don’t understand why people have them. They annoy me.
