Can someone tell me what difference changing cassette to 11-32 from 11-34 would make?
I’ve searched high and low on the net but can’t find a thing?

    Thanks

slightly higher smallest ratio, so you’ll be pedalling slightly slower. and you can take two links off your chain. thats it.

You’d have a slightly lower bottom gear. Slightly bigger gaps between some of the gears. You probably won’t notice any difference.

You may need a slightly longer (one link) chain, but probably not.

Oh aye, misread the direction you were going in. PJ266 is right!

Thanks guys, what do most people run?

I prefer a 34. it allows you to stay in middle ring a bit longer on some climbs which somehow feels faster, even if it’s not. I don’t notice the slightly wider gap between some of the gears but i appreciate that lower gear.

I doubt you’d notice it in practice. I normally go for the 11-32 just because of the minor weight saving.

I find the 11-34 is better on my FS due to the extra weight and the easier climbing gears.

11-32 seems to shift better though, smaller jumps between some gears

I’m currently on 11-34, but i think next time i’ll go 11-32 and get fitter 😀

the 34 is five arm and lasts better, the 4 arm one doesnt support the larger sprockets well and they get damaged easier

I changed from a 34 to a 32 and can barely notice the difference.

    11-28 here.
i know people who run 11:34 and no granny ring, which strikes me a stupid when you can just get a tighter block…

I figure that if I can’t get up it on the 32, I’m going that slow anyway that I’ll walk. I call it cross-training.

    11-34 I can’t remember riding a 11-32, I may have and never noticed 😆

I’m with Gingerflash on this one. I went to 11-34 to avoid the granny ring except on desperate climbs. Having said that I find I can’t use the 34 sprocket with the granny ring cos it feels too weird!

people often say that 22-34 is slower than walking, but it’s usually about 3mph, and if that’s the gear that the hill requires, it’s unlikely you can push a bike up it at more than 3mph.

Besides, I absolutely hate pushing my bike. would always rather ride, even if it were slower. If bigger sprocket allows me to keep pedalling up that b@stard hill just a little longer, then that’s the one I’ll buy.

    What GF said above!

11-34 here and steep climbs are a challenge, I don’t care if it’s faster to walk, I’m on a bike ride and I want to ride them 🙂

I doubt you’d notice. Even those folk who’re desperate to get up stuff in the middle ring would probably do just as well with 32t.

My dodgy knees love a granny ring & 34 tooth ratio

+1 for not pushing unless I am on the verge of a heart attack

I went to 11-32 because crc had 11-32 cassettes uber cheap in the flood sale. When fitting said cassette I noticed that I was “running, rocking and rubbing” a 11-32 already.

That’s handy. I stuck on a 11-34 one time, after running an 11-32, and then found I needed to stick more chain links on. And I’d already cut the new chain to the same length as the old one. And then realised my medium cage rear mech wasn’t best suited to the 34t largest sprocket. Etc. PITA…

somewhere between a brely noticable ammount and fek all.

must admit to being tempted y a rodie block next time though, 9speed stuff is cheep as chips from some places, and 10speed is just to pimpy to resist (and pointless, i know)

I tend to go for whichever is cheapest!

11-32 here. Never had the need for 11-34. As far as I’m aware the only difference between the two cassettes is that one has a top sprocket with two more teeth on it.

12-27 for nice tight cadence for racing!

looks like I was wrong… think it’s something like this :

    Sprocket ratio:
    11-32 11-12-14-16-18-21-24-28-32
    11-34 11-13-15-17-20-23-26-30-34

see here for all cassette setups (use the drop down)

I usually go for the 11-32.

I have a fairly steep hill on a weekly ride route that the 34T works so much better on than the 32T. I also run 1×9 so its my only option for lower gearing.

I use a 12-34 (XTR), it annoys me that most MTB cassettes go down to a frankly pointless 11. The 34 is very handy though.

11-32. If I can’t get up it on 22/32, then all a 34 will do is let me generate too much torque and either spin out or loop out.

I am with GF for once.
I hate pushing my bike. Plus you’ll almost never use 22/34 on the road (ok beside going up le col du berceaux around menton). It’ will be mainly off road. And you’ll be walking even slower.
Then the 32/34 debate will depend on
    Where do you live.
    How you pedal
What bike you have (my FS have 34, if I gear up my hardtail it will be a 32).

If you use a sram cassette, just be aware that it’s 34 and 28 so quite a big gap.

I aggree with crazy-legs, the 11 cog is pointless. And actually i use a 12-34 cassette, shame they are only in XTR now…

I’ve seen it claimed that a 12t is actually faster than an 11t, because the tighter bend on the chain on an 11t means more friction in the rollers. No idea if it’s true though.

I’m now running SLX 11-28, been waiting for years for that on 9 speed, previously was on 12-27.

find 34T means you can stay in middle longer on steeper stuff, so less faffing with granny, great for technical singletrack with short steep climbs

decent 34t isnt much heavier than the 32t, but the deore is well hefty, but lasts forever

11-27 or 12-27 would be great.

even 28 for the big sprocket.
    but where from?
