HBO Max available now through Sky, so tried The Pitt after the rave reviews I've seen. Thought it was ok. Er, yeah, it was ok. Only 1 episode watched though, maybe I'll get into it and see past some of the whoops nursey just walked in on me having a poo rubbish bits.
Just did the first 3 episodes and loved it, but I was a huge ER fan back in the 90s and The Pitt is basically as though ER never finished and just segued into The Pitt
I was just coming on here to post about Defective Hole; really, really bad. An exercise in style over substance.
I'm all about the style. Seriously though, it has been much better than many things I've seen that were recommended here and other places. Mebbes I'm just a sucker for a clichéd tortured drunken detective in a shit old car (Rebus, Morse, etc.).
I just caught up with Capture (episode 4). Really, what rubbish. It’s totally jumped the shark and turned into something like The Avengers without the humour or Diana Rigg’s 60’s outfits.
I've been doing a bit of a nostalgia trip on Now. Last night was Excalibur. and tonight i've just watched the musical 'Oh what a lovely war'
Finished watching The Agency. For me that’s a milestone because I seldom get past the second episode of anything! Had some obvious holes in it - I have a son doing a PhD in Geophysics, but was watchable.

As a retired geophysicist, I can assure you that it’s completely realistic. Maybe.

Agree! It's gone a bit Jason Bourne super soldier, Tony stark power pack, and a bit 70s Dr Who with the unit and captain Lethbridge-stewart
Detective Hole was better than the surname suggested.
Norwegian detective series. Bit neo-noir with the retrospect Sherlock Holmes style piecing/solving the crime at end .. cheesy but watchable.
*Watched one episode of Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen .. the title should have been enough to warn me. It's actually very accurate too, it was worse than very bad!!

Remind me how long your training was? It wasn't the subject matter, it was the speed of acquisition to get to a PhD that was not credible.

Well, in the US it was 5 years min. Basically 2 years coursework + research and then just research. Could be longer depending on the project and (as it's the US) finances.
(My first comment was mostly about the general glamour of the profession 🙂 )
Just watched the first series of Big Boys after seeing a review for the third series. Poignant, thoughtful, funny.

It's a great show. The final series though man, oooof.

Basically depends on the discipline and specific university/country. Some disciplines require coursework, others just require a thesis, and some allow and alternative thesis, so basically three published research papers of high quality. Three years is pretty normal so I imagine a prodigy would get through it in two years.
I'm doing a deep dive, rewatching all four seasons of The Boys prior to the final fifth season kicking off in a couple of weeks. Finished the first season: forgotten just how good it is, and how on point with regard to the shitshow going down in the Land of the Free right now. It'll be very interesting to see how Season Five reflects on the current reality.
Season one was superb, but after that high there was only one way to go...
Yeah. The first few episodes of this final season were weak but yesterday's Episode Five was like a punch in the stomach, very prescient given Trump's recent delusions of divinity and throwing (female) supporters under the bus.
Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen
I don't think it was aimed at being a serious sort of show, it's intentionally a bit off. I enjoyed it, in a dumb fun way, the sister was excellently played.

The writer of the Boys was commenting on the fact that initially he thought the story line that has Homelander believing that he's God was a bit on the nose even for them...
The Pitt - it's very very good.
Really enjoying The Cage on iPlayer. Michael Socha has always been a really good, watchable actor in the things I've seen him in. He's excellent in this. What I like about it is the drama is good, it's quite grim, but there are also some laugh out loud funny scenes. Impressed so far.
I watched The Killer the other night. Netflix. It's a John Woo remake of a John Woo film called The Killer from 1989! Go figure...
However it is John Woo back to his usual stylistic tricks. Flappy doves, gunfights in churches / churchyards, people flying through the air while firing guns, guns being fired in slo-mo...
Not as stylish as Face/Off although there are several near enough identical camera shots.
Watched the first episode of Scarpetta on ?Prime. Seemed promising. I read a number of the books it's based on, - sort of "Silent Witness" type thing set in the US. Nicole Kidman, Jamie Lee Curtis. Absolute bilge. It's a hodge hodge of every cliche you can imagine. Jamie Lee overacting at Olympic level, cliche lesbian prodigy daughter, plot that makes no sense whatsoever. Won't be watching any more.
watched Apex tonight on Netflix, recommended by a couple of people at work. Pretty much what I expected, but not bad really. Good performances by the 2 leads.
Never heard of another film called Riff Raff cept the Ken Loach one but last night stumbled across another one, from 2024, I think it was on HBO... Stars Ed Harris and Bill Murray, I mean, can't go wrong with those 2. Was actually quite excellent. Recommended.
Good Red Hot Chilli Peppers docu on Netflix (or maybe it was Prime.. soz, there's so many) - I always (to anyone who'll listen).that I was into them when Hillel was in the band, but didn't really know anything about his death - documentary was about the early days, so watched it and it was really interesting.

There was a glitch in the STW matrix last night - wouldn't open the site so I could edit that post. When it eventually did, it appears as me quoting myself, I'm sure the 2 events weren't 25mins apart... bloody weird, thought it was all supposed to be working properly now.
Anyone watched Steal on Prime (if anyone except me still using this thread!?)?
First one was very promising (heist in a London finance firm), but not sure where it goes from there. The previews look a bit... 🤔

Watched it a few months back. I remember it being reasonably entertaining.
And finished "Man on Fire" on Netflix, which also was reasonably entertaining.
I gave up on the boys after season 2 but thought I’d watch a bit of the final season to see how bad its got, I wasn’t disappointed. It’s a real shame, season 1 was awesome.
^same^
I'm about halfway through The Boys S5 and... it's fine. It's the Boys I guess; but even looking back over S5 and trying to piece together the various plot developments is a bit exhausting - they have the macguffin, now the macguffin is all gone, he's dead, now he's alive again, now he's dead etc etc. It's just a bit much. I do enjoy watching for the various filming locations around Toronto though.
Just wrapped up Blue Lights S3 and liked it; in the final episode I was thinking it's probably a better show now than Line of Duty - but I guess we'll see when LoD S7 comes out.
Your Friends and NEighbours started good, but has started to drag (think we're at E6). Legends on Netflix is getting some good press; although in the various press interviews Coogan isn't doing very well at dispelling the idea that he takes himself far too seriously...
Did I mention this earlier? Have been watching S1 Person of Interest while on trainerroad and enjoying it a lot. S2-5 seems to be on Prime. Gets good reviews as well, probs as JJ Abrams on the team. Mrs Epic now binging as well.
After a weak final season I just watched the final episode of The Boys and....it was great. Really well judged, a fitting and surprisingly emotional end to the show.
I'll take a wild stab and ask: is this worth watching next time I take out a Netflix sub?
(I only know it because of the Airbourne connection).
Enjoyed watching 'The Dark Wizard' on HBO, 4 part doco on Dean Potter (climber, highliner, base jumper, wing suiter) if you thought free solo was a stressful watch with some of the footage....
Mint on BBC i-player.
I thought that the ending felt unfinished, which always annoys me, but it's apparently an artistic device that's meant to be.
Definitely worth a look, especially if you appreciate the art of endings 🤔
Is it just me, or has the picture quality on Netflix deteriorated badly?
I was watching Legends and the artifacts/pixelation were awful, to the point of distraction. I wasn't sure whether it was supposed to be the "gritty '80's" look at first. Then I watched Apex and that had terrible artifacts as well.
Im watching TV on a 4k 65" Samsung and this happened whether I used the Samsung Netflix app or my Amazon Firestick Netflix app or thru my laptop browser routed thru a HDMI cable to the TV.
I've got a 150Mbps feed and other platforms (eg BBC iPlayer or YouTube) work fine.
BTW: Legends is excellent whereas Apex is absolute drivel...
Not noticed any deterioration in the Netflix quality - I get a weird thing when watching The Boys on Prime though (not sure if it happens with other programmes) - the picture goes dark and then lighter every now and again, like it's trying to auto-adjust the contrast. Quite annoying. Setting on the telly or on Prime?
BTW: Legends is excellent
Mrs Kilo liked it but I thought it was pretty crap. Soundtrack was good though.

I watched the first three episodes, it's very predictable. I'll probably finish it, but it's pretty average.
We are about three episodes in to Sleepers on Netflix, bent dutch cop series. So far it's been quite good.
Came to see about Legends. I enjoyed it, Guardian gave it 3/5 - I'd go 3.5. Good fun, bit tense in places, predictable in the end without any twist to liven things up.

Yes, highly entertaining and lots of 1980s rock music. We binged every series as it came out.
(he types wearing an Eagle Fang Karate t-shirt)
Last couple of weeks we've been watching The Newsreader, which was good.
Just started Man in the High Castle. Couple of episodes in, I'm not convinced, she's enjoying though
And I'm still chugging through Better Call Saul, just one and a half seasons to go...

The 4k DV stream is good but if you turn off DV and just have 4K Rec 709.- the stream is poor with much artefact-ing.
I'm guessing all their compression goes into preserving their DV stream. Dunno.
It's also a grain heavy and stylistic look too which makes it hard to compress and look clean, as that's not the intention.
Enjoying Dutton Ranch on Paramount as a half-decent spin off of Yellowstone. It's the same old but with slightly less angry Beth. Given Sheridan's not hugely involved I was expecting worse. Some big hitters in this. (Ed Harris.)
I've just started Euphoria on HBO - it's hard to get past the - "this is for shock value element." And does feel like it borrows heavily from Trainspotting in many ways. (voice-over, art direction etc.) Also I never buy this much grungy stuff is going on all the time at the American high school etc.
Cinematography is amazing though.
Also DTF St Louis is suitably interesting on HBO Max. Mainstream actors really warping it up. Love how that's put together.
