Gallery: Red Bull Hardline 2018 – The Warm Up

by 6

It’s Red Bull Hardline this weekend. As the name suggests, riders will be taking it in turns to swoop down a hillside on a trail punctuated by gaps which many of us would assume were whole sections of trail that had yet to be built. Drops, gaps, slabs, jumps – all on a scale that is a bit boggling to behold.

Luckily, the 29 riders who are lining up at the top of the course this weekend are given a chance to practice – really, this is practically cheating, surely they should be riding it blind? Photographers were on hand to check things out, so riders took the chance not just to practice their lines, but also to style things up a bit.

Making everything look easy…we’re sure we could do this course if only we had the right bike, and the right outfit…check out our pick of the pics from the action so far.

See, just a small drop.
Totally rollable.
I can get it back.
At this point, elbow pads seemed like a good idea.
Look where you want to go?
Don’t crash here, they’ll never be able to find you in the trees.
Taking cyclocross re-mounting to the next level.
We’re not sure if this is an amazing trick, or imminent disaster.
Definitely got time to pull my trousers up before I land this.

OK, we’re just jesting here. We’re appropriately mind boggled and awed by the skills and steeze of these riders. It’s pretty hard to get a fix on just how huge some of these features are, or how steep the track is.

Quite steep.
You say jump we say incomplete trail.
One of me, two of me, three of me…
Rider coming through, under you.
STRAVA! GET OUT OF THE WAY!!!

It doesn’t always go to plan, but then, that’s the point of the practice days, surely?

Oh, bother…
Oh look, a tree!
I’m a koala!
I’m not a koala!

We interrupt this story with a series of shots of planes. Because, well, planes. Planes and bikes. Flying planes and flying bikes. If that doesn’t excite you, please disable your internet safety settings and find another site.

Big plane.
Little plane. Or is it far away?
Do not be distracted from The Step Up by The Plane.
There’s a lot of boot space in these modern 4x4s. Room for a plane.

Enough planes. Let’s move on to some ‘lifestyle’ shots. i.e. hanging around, looking cool, chillin’, track walkin’, practising fist bumps and many different finger pose combos.

Look…interested…must…look…interested…
There was a queue to see the headmaster.
Left, death on a stick. Right, death on a pointy stick.
Everyone, do cool fingers!
There was some confusion over which was the correct cool finger move.
Fingers and tongues can be cool too.
One finger, purposeful cool.
That’s just half hearted floaty fingers. Not cool.
The pressure to do something cool got to him.
Back on safe ground, with the fist bump.
Like an advert for something…sewing kits?

Enough lifestylin’ and hangin’ out. Back to the action. Let’s have some speed blur pan shot air time glory.

Glorious. Too glorious to be cheeky about.

Imagine having a photo of yourself like that. Just imagine…

This is probably a more achievable photographic goal for us mortals.
A tube? And sealant. Oh the mess.
And here is where we were going to have a bridge, but the EU funding dried up.
ET is a documentary.
WHAT? ET is real?
ET is real…
ET is real…
More EU funding cuts. You better hope ET is real.

The skills of these riders – and their guts – are astounding. We look forward to the event at the weekend and wish them all safe passage down the hillside.

One-foot table.
No-foot can-can

Tickets are sold out but you can watch the action on Red Bull TV at 6pm UK time on Sunday 16 September.

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.
