We know that if you’re lurking here in your lunch hour, then there’s a fair chance you like riding your bike. If you also happen to be a closet runner and are after a bit of a challenge to keep you keen over the winter, then have a look at the Open5 adventure races.
There are seven events in the series and the format’s simple: use a combination of running and riding to visit as many checkpoints as you can in the given time. You can race solo or as part of a pair and you’re responsible for deciding which proportion of the course you cover on foot/by bike, as well as for your navigation between each checkpoint.
The next round – South Pennines – is taking place at (and around) Lee Quarry, just over the hill from Singletrack, on Sunday 4th December. It’s being co-organised by Tony Lund, Lancashire resident and local knowledge expert. You might even see Chipps there if he can find himself a teammate who knows how to work a compass…
