My £600 ford connect that I bought Dec last year is due to die on the 28th Dec when the mot runs out and I have between £4K to £5k max to replace it, being based in rural Galloway there’s not much choice locally so I’d have to travel to find something decent.

    Anyone have opinions on either?.

Away to work so I’ll check back later, cheers peeps.

Well i made a choice all on my own, with this being STW there was only one choice so it had to be a VW Caddy in Highline spec with all the toys, £1k over budget with one previous owner being a VW dealership who used the van as a parts delivery vehicle.

    Quite chuffed with it.

I wouldn’t choose one model over the other – I would choose on previous owner, condition and history.

Edit. I just realised OP and first post were the same. 😳

    Alright White Van Man?

Awesome, when I part ways with my vivaro a caddy will be the next choice. Great wee vans!

Cheers mac, I looked at few connects/caddys over a hectic few days (and 700 miles of travelling back n’ forward to view) and I realised i much preferred the caddy so I picked the best I could find at short notice, I’ve already had the timing belt/water pump changed and a full service done with miller oils by a mate who’s “spannered” for the VW WRC team and he seemed impressed enough with the condition so hopefully I’ve actually bought something decent for a change. Next weekend I hoping he’s got the time to fiddle with it as he said it’s easy to get a reliable 140bhp and 300nm of torque out of the 1.6tdi to play with.

If that only cost you £6k, even if it’s got mega miles on it, you’ve done quite well!

Next weekend I hoping he’s got the time to fiddle with it as he said it’s easy to get a reliable 140bhp and 300nm of torque out of the 1.6tdi to play with.

Just had mine done the other week. Went from 95bhp (mine was seemingly a little down as most put out bang on 102 from the factory the tuner said) to 140bhp and 297NM of torque up from 250. Thing is, it drives just like you might expect a higher power factory tuned engine to drive, it’s not peaky at all. Basically, VW engines are designed to be able to put out pretty decent outputs if required, but they limit them via software from the factory. Basically, above 3krpm on the factory map, the fuel delivery to the engine becomes very limited, meaning the torque drops off and the power barely climbs at all. With the new tune, fuelling is much better right through to the redline, and though the torque drops slightly above 3krpm it doesn’t drop anywhere near as much as before, which meas the power continues to climb much further.

Anyway… Long as the short of it is it’s now a nice van to drive. It’s not fast, but it’s fast enough. And unless you rev the nuts off it all day every day, it shouldn’t affect the longevity of the engine either.

£6.4k including vat on 109k miles (which I’m not worried about in the slightest) with full VW Benfield service history as it was their depot vehicle between service centres and I was anal enough to phone the service centres to check out history. Yeah he gave me a few options on possible tunes but he did say the 1.6tdi can easily cope with the simple 140bhp/300nm ECU flash upgrade, he did mention an achievable 450NM tune with upgraded turbo/intercooler/Ecu/clutch/exhaust/Dpf removal but I’ll be happy with the simple upgrade (for now anyway 😉 )

Very nice van. I used to drive a ford van and went over to VW a while back. I wouldn’t go back.

It’s just a b***** that on a single carriage way they have a 50mph limit, because the GVW is over 2ton.

I’ve had 2 in the last 7 months as a works vehicles, both 2015 102 hp engined. The 1 @ 40k would sit @ 70mpg + around 50-55 mph , the 1 @ 30k was @ 50-55 mpg doing the same speed. Weird thing is the better mpg van was quicker ❓
