Opposition leaders spirited away in the night.
    Every economic indicator in freefall
    Meanwhile, on the streets,

This isn’t going to end well, is it?

It is, for Fox “news” commentards.

While Chavez was no Boy Scout, Madura is a total despot.
Maybe Trump can work his magic down there, get things running smoothly again…

There’s a better way of doing things, its called socialism.

People going hungry in a country with greater oil reserves than Saudi Arabia is a powerful example of why governments fixing prices just doesn’t work.

It’s very very sad indeed. I went there 7 years ago, the area around the Colombian border in the North (which basically was paradise) then over to Caracas.

A lovely country with lovely people. Not good.

Used to go windsurfing there years ago, lovely place. Chavez was just starting to initiate his “grand social plan” and everyone was supporting his initiative, even farmers.
It’ll end as it started, bit of a rift, a few killings, call for peace, economic aid, new government, plants will grow and people will laugh.

Funnily enough working much better in socialist Bolivia next door, who had similar natural resources but built up reserves and have seen live expectancy, income etc boom. 10 years? since Morales came to power and still fastest growth in south America, even with gas price fall.

It’s almost as if your zombie-like accepting of whatever the telegraph tells you to think doesn’t work out, like that time they told you paying labour £3 to vote for Corbyn would result in a Tory landslide 😉

(Yes I’m not going to let you forget that one)

Apparently this is only happening because Jezza hasn’t condemned it.

I don’t know how he sleeps at night

Jezza’s total silence is a disgrace but not a surprise. Then we have his Shadow Cabinet minister complaining about US sanctions !

Classic result of full on solicialism, no food in the shops, rioting followed by the rounding up of those who critise you / point out the bleeding obvious. As above the situation on the ground is going to get worse before it gets better

See, the thing about South American dictators is…

    …well it’s complicated.

I’m always impressed with how much compassion right wing nut jobs have for the poor of Venezuela. It’s really touching.

I see everything through a prism of the USA **** with the Americas too much over the years.

For years Venezuela was a rich country (5th biggest oil producer) full of mostly very poor people. America loved it.

Then along came “populist” “socialist” Chavez and set about sorting out the social inequality. The US pulled the plug big-time and before long it was a not-so rich country full of mostly poor people. That seems to have given the right-wingers a stick to beat the Ken Livingstones of this world with and so on.

As they say on the interwebs “South Americans gonna oppress”. ymmv.

Contrast Venezuela with Naija where shiploads of money are being looted yet things still seem to work. The difference? Uncle Sam is welcome in Naija.

Jambalaya, I think you are probably right to criticise Corbyn’s failure to condemn Maduro/what is happening in Venezuela.

Did Thatcher hold up the Pinochet regime as something to aspire to?

She praised him for ‘beginning a new era in Chile, founded on True democracy’

Im not sure how lobbing your political opponents out of helicopters and killing 11000 civillians with british made weapons of war counts as true democracy?

but then y’know he was a good egg really

Care to compare the cost of producing oil in Saudi Arabia with that in Venezuela. Then compare both with the current market price of crude oil.

Probably not (though I’m sure she would if there was a vote or a dolar in it). So is Jezza suggesting the Maduro regime is something to aspire to?

I don’t think the poster is confused. In fact the massively simplistic analysis probably seems quite clear.

Do I really have to explain how hypocritical it is for the Tories to criticise Corbyn for a lack of morals when their own party is selling weapons to someone like the Saudis?

The Tories can’t claim any moral high ground on this because they don’t fing have any.

    Jeez.

    I don’t believe I’ve had to explain that….

    So as clueless as ever…
