Steel frame 29er with rigid forks

I’m thinking about building up a 29er steel frame with rigid carbon forks and 2×10 drivetrain to use for pootling about the woods and a bit of road/fireroad stuff.

Anyone out there with something similar? Can you post some pics please?

Thanks for the pic, that’s rather nice Scotroutes…well laden too 🙂 I haven’t settled on a final gear spec yet so could end up with 3×9 too.

Pace RC129, Reynolds 853, with a steel fork to match, rides lovely, it just pings along the trails. It’s singlespeed at the minute, but will do gears as well, so if you fancy a winter with one cog and less maintainence it’s ideal, and then pop gears on for summer.

My favourite bike at present sadly due to injury i have only ridden a bike twice this year, but i ride rigid on anything from fireroad to enduro trails, love it!

Thanks for the pics folks. The bikes look great and have given me a good idea of how my potential build might look. Benji – singlespeed in winter and gears is summer sounds like a plan 😀

Despite building this as a winter/hack bike it has actually become the bike i enjoy riding the most at the moment, singlespeeding is actually quite addictive!

Sheephills – the bike is 19.5″ size, i’m 6 foot tall and the fit is spot on for me.

As for the boxes, yep they’re garden storage, most garden centres do them or something similar as do Argos, like this one:

Jones in road trip mode. Steel rules.

How are the rigid forks on rougher trails? Sorely tempted to pre-order one of the new Swifts at £400 to build up for an all-rounder, but just a little nagging doubt about rigid forks. Guess they can be swapped though. (And they probably wouldn’t be any worse than the ancient 80mm bombers on my old Kona anyway).

Unless its serious DHing you won’t notice the lack of suspension after a couple of rides. To me rigid feels more direct, gives you a lighter front end and more control.

The only rigid fork i’ve ridden is the Exotic carbon one on my On-one, and with a 29er wheel fitted with a 2.4 front tyre at 30psi, i honestly don’t think it is any harsher than a short travel 26er over most trails, the only time i notice it is on small drops.

Have you thought about 1×9 or even 1×10 set up, I’m running a 1×9(rear road cassette) at the mo and I’ve never had any trouble getting up the big climbs at trail centres and natural trails to.
Save weight to!!

34t or 36t IMO

FWIW, I much prefer the feel of the rigid forks over the Rebas on my El Mariachi. Of course there is a bit more “chatter” bit the bike just feels a lot more lively.
