So I went with my best buddy to the F1 qualifying yesterday, had a awesome day in the grandstand opposite the pits despite the rain....

My buddy used to go to school with MIchael Schumachers "race engineer" a guy called Pete aka bono. He's the one that you hear on the tv talking to schui as he drives.

My buddy gave his mate a call and hey presto we where in the pits almost as soon as quali was over... Watching the team clean and perp the car for the race under the watchfull eyes of the scrutineer. So bono was talking us through his job, and in walks Michael to have a Chet with him.... I nearly fell over, OMG though I . They started chatting, and then went to a meeting about tyres etc, and left me and my buddy in the pits to have a look around. When bono and Michael came back he said hello and shook our hands and bono asked what Michael was up to later as we where out for a curry in brackley, ( and he could come along too if he liked) Michael said he was planning to go to motor home have something to eat and play chess and watch tome TV , rock and roll eh ?

S off we trot to the van to get changed, and then met the other halls in the curry house, as we where excitedly telling the wives that we met schui guess who walked in ? Only MIchael TIme for a group OMG

So he sat with us, and the rest of the pit crew and had a curry.... I couldn't believe it either.

When the bill came he refused to let anyone pay, there was 18 of us, and paid for everything, needless to say this was the greatest thing that has ever happened in a small curry house on the high street.

We said thanks, and shook his hand and off he went, it was nearly 11pm when he left us !

So my weekend was awesome, and my new favourite driver is.... Lol

It is who you know.

Though I am surprised that Schumacher is eating curry before a big race and some food more fitting for a top class athelete such as pasta, veg etc.

I liked it too 🙂

Still can't quite believe he had a curry and paid for my lamb bhuna and 3 pints of kingfisher 🙂

Superb, what a great tale.

Did he knock your plate of the table with his because you were about to finish first? 🙂

It's nice when heroes and celebrities are nice, normal people. So many are complete nobbers. Schumacher always struck me as kind of a normal guy, so its nice to hear he is!

He was a proper nice bloke, and it's for that reason that I didn't even ask to have a pic with him.... Even tho it killed me to not ask! He was so down to earth, and it was great to be privileged enough to chill with him and his pit boys + their girlfriends, the night before a race.

I was amazed by the "no special diet" thing too... But he had a chicken tika main ( no sauce) pilau rice, plain naan, and a bottle of sparkling Perrier water.

like I said still blown away that it actually happened...

It sure is who you know, and I'm so great full to Pete for inviting us along for the curry, meeting him in the pit garage was awesome enough. Lol

Props to you for not asking for a photo or being all star-struck.

We are good family friends with Philip Selway, the drummer from Radiohead. Himself and his family are so down to earth unless you recognised them you wouldn't know it was him. We had a really awkward time once in an Italian restaurant local to us where the manager on the evening recognised who Philip was and decided to commit several staff just to our table, free drinks all night, chairs pulled out from under us as we left, coats put on our backs, but you could tell they didn't enjoy this kind of attention...Having said all that, posting it on an internet forum is probably just as bad...

Oh... And to make it even better the race engineers mrs is Maxine FIlby who is a world xc mtb racer... She's ranked as 167 in the world at the moment. I was blown away by that too.

Naaahhh ... treat celebrities like your next door neighbour and you should be fine.

Not sure if I am up to worshipping celebrities or famous people but showing respect should be all you need.

Glad to hear that he is a down to earth person.

Brill.

I think we need a "famous people what I have met for more than eight seconds" thread. I wonder if anyone else has any good stories.

Top story, love it ❗

Beats my skiing with Schumacher story, which was great (even though he's a bit of a crap skier  )

Would much rather have a curry and a pint with him !

Brilliant, this brought a smile to my face. Still think he's the best driver just hampered by a car which is off the pace.

No doubt a very interesting man to chat with, so what are his views on the following?

The glorification of speed and death rate among road users mistaking the public road for a race track.

A car industry that sells vehicles totally unsuitable for use on the public road with lousy visability, a driving position too low and 200mph performance in a country with a 70mph speed limit.

Climatic change and the futile of burning of fuel by motoring enthusiasts driving around poinlessly.

F1 pandering to the whims of dictators anf the super rich.

The morality of being a tax exile.

I once went clubbing in Kuala Lumpar with Mika Hakkinen and his wife, ended up with them coming back to mine and me armwrestling Mika topless.

STW usually give Schumacher a good bashing, so nice to see positive stuff for a change.

Does just show that top sports people are generally nice, but they have that competitive ruthlesness that enables them to win.

Its kind of made it more understandable why he has returned to F1. He's been there, done that, now can take it easier, and get paid to drive the best cars in the world, and go for a curry, what more could you want???

Vindicates my actions of having a curry the night before Mountain Mayhem 😆

Well, I thought my bumping into the Dalai Lama in KFC and paying for his bargain bucket (Bono was supposed to be apparently, but he was getting some fags in Threshers and was stuck in the queue because Barack Obama was trying to pay for a 3L bottle of White Lightning with dollars) was going to be the food-related celebrity tale of the weekend, but it seems I've been beaten.

Not having a go at the OP..

To be fair if I had met some one in such circumstances I wouldn't then tell everyone on the net, they are less likely to do it in future if people are prepared to go and blab on the internet about stuff they do in their private life.

Ace!

I didn't like him very much in 1994, but since he's been driving for Mercedes, I've been disappointed not to see him win races.

He's also a major donator to charidee.

I'd love to have a curry with the guy. But Hill should have won in Adelaide '94.

'schumaker in curry house scandal!'

according to an obscure anally retentive cycling forum - 'he was nice'

hardly damaging is it..!? 🙄

Funky dunc.

I see your point, but there was no photos or gratuitous fan behaviour, just a casual meal.

... And to be fair I'm rather pleased it happened to me hence the post 🙂
I'm sure "ordinary" people meet famous people often enough and then tell others about it,no harm there.

And FYI I believe this is something he does fairly often, that is go out in public and be "normal" .
