DIY workbench and bench vice

Probably a daft question.

But can this:

..i am about to DIY service 3 shocks and 4 forks.. So sending to mojo is out of the picture and would probably cost a fortune ..so sadly have to learn.. The joy of many bikes huh 😐

I got one of these from Screwfix Keter Folding Workbench

Never used it for bike servicing but the clamping system is rather neat and very strong. I am very happy with it for “normal” DIY.

I’d get a heavier duty bolt on vice with bigger jaws. Bolt it to a solid bit of wood (sort of scaffold plank dimensions) and then clamp the piece of wood to the workbench using g-clamps.

you’ll have the work further away from the edge of the bench which might make life easier and it’ll be more secure too.

have you got a bike stand ?

i would just clamp the steerer in the bike stand tbh.

i dont see what you will gain from the vice for servicing forks and shocks IMO.

I can recommend the Keter bench mentioned above. For £50 they are very good, take about 3 seconds to put up and the clamps grip very well, couple that with wwaswas’ idea and you’ll be sorted.

@ trail_rat ..holding shock eyelet ?

Tbh im just trying to mimic the picture of how they do it in service manual 🙂

Is the jaw on the on link not big enough to hold the shock eyelet?…how strong and sturdy is that clamp in the keter workbench?

the one you’ve linked to will be ok for holding the shock (although you could probably just clamp it in the two halves ot he bench you linked to if you made a suitably shaped bit of wood.

[edit] I like the swivel ont his as I have it mounted on the corenr of the bench and can use it either at right angles to wear I stand or inline with it and it swings out the way when not in use. For you the Irwin one could be fine as it won;t be permanenntly fixed anyway.

If you ever want to start bashign wheel bearings out of hope hubs or holding heavier stuff (like forks) at an angle to cut steerers etc you may find you get more ‘wobble’ from the one you’ve linked to as it’s not secured to the workbench.

depends on your workstand – no issues holding shock eyelet in mine.

if its an aldi special i can see the issue.

Fix it to a plywood slab and add “T” to bottom of slab – to easily clamp on workmate type cheap bench.
