Had a spare BT phone socket in the house that we never used so I unscrewed it from the wall and pulled it off, thereby disconnecting the wires. Tbh I didn’t even think it was live.

Now the main socket which runs the phone and broadband is dead. Anyone know what’s going on here and what I’d need to do to rectify the situation. I’ve tried reconnecting the box with the wires with whAt I assumed they were, but both boxes now seem dead. Am lost without my broadband….. 🙁

You might have just shorted something out by yanking on things by the sounds of it. Open up the main socket and disconnect any extension wires inside there properly. If you don’t know which bits are extension and which bit is the actual phone line google it, or get someone who does know to help. BT will probably charge you to fix things if you muck about with the line and knacker it so go carefully.

Picture of the swocket you removed first would be helpful. You may have disconnected the mastrer socket and the “main” socket is actually a fitted extension socket.

Here you go chaps, I’m pretty sure the green and black wires were connected to A & B, I’ve tried reconnecting them but to no avail. Don’t think the white or orange wires were connected.

try disconnecting them from the master socket.

if it still doesn’t work you’ve borked something by shorting it out 🙁

Thats your main box (i think) and has to be connected otherwise your phone wont work. inside the green box is the main incommer gubbins, check on wiki or wherever where it needs to connect in the box and make sure the cables are fully inserted, they are self cutting connectors but sometimes need a jiggle.

That’s an extension (I think!) marcus.

If you take the front of your master socket, there’ll be a test socket underneath – if you connect your router (ADSL filter etc) to the test socket, you should get your broadband back whilst you figure out what you’ve mucked up

Thats a main socket youve removed. The wires need to be connected to B & A.
The extension wiring needs to be connected to 2 & 5 (wire / blue and blue / white cables)

Loddrick your picture is a master socket the same aswoodys oicture but from the other side.
Connect the Black and Green to A and B and test the socket by plugging an old analogue phone into the test socket under the bottom half ogf the face plate.

If that doesn’t work then try the orange and white pair. (You only have two choices anyway)
If you get a dial tone then with your old phone plugged in try ringing the line. If the phone doesn’t ring then you have the correct pair but the wrong way round.

Since your ADSL appears to be on an extension the second pair must go to it. These should be connected to 2 and 5.

My guess is that this socket is the original master. An extension has been added that required a cable to another room. The engineer or (do it yourself bodger like me)has used the second pair in the cable to run the line back to the external junction box. Then they will have connected the extension pair to another cable that runs to the window where the router is.
