    There is a six form college that will get you a CCNA somewhere in Kent I think. Maybe aimed at that?

    You know, this isn’t a dig so much as a general moan, but I really wish recruiters would advertise salaries as “starting from” rather than “up to.” You’re basically saying “we’ll pay you the minimum we can get away with, but whatever that is, we guarantee it won’t be more than £25k.” Ten bob a month is up to £25k.

    At least you give an idea though, I guess. I grow tired of adverts that list salary as “negotiable” or “competitive.” If you can’t be up front with me, I don’t want to work for you.

    Good point. And if your experience is sufficient to warrant the ceiling of the salary, you’re overqualified.

    i’m not a recruiter, its just we need another engineer where I work and there seem to be a few IT types on here so though I would give someone here the opportunity to apply directly for a role and probably get it based on how you come accross rather than srictly whats on your CV, something of a rarity these days.

    I meant the OP. Some companies give a kickback to existing staff who find successful new recruits. Our place gives about a grand IIRC.

    We get £250 if someone is recruited AND sticks around a year. Needless to say not many people get £250.

    tbf first line support offering 25k isn’t to bad but first line support wanting ccna mcts is asking a bit much, plus if you have those you are going to be wanting more then first line role.

    Loads of colleges and university’s in the UK are now connected to Cisco’s learning network so finding CCENT or CCNA level candidates should be relatively easy in that there London. Not sure about the MS stuff.

    I would say that the salary isn’t bad for an entry level job (even in London). A good way to build up experience and get a feel for different areas of IT.

    Might be worth mentioning if it’s a technical service desk role or a helpdesk role. I see so many service desks nowadays who just log tickets and pass them through to a team to investigate. My mum could do that.

    MCTS is a bit vague, MCTS in what tech strand?
    I have MCTS in Configuration Manager and Operations Manager. Neither of which would be much use on a first line helpdesk, well not much aside from to get both of those I have know Win client and server back to front. I’m sure you get my point though a .net MCTS usually can’t map a drive on their own.. 😉

    I don’t think it matters. It’s a “desirable” skill.

    In my experience of job advertisements, “desirable” translates either as “here are some words Marketing heard once and thought they sounded cool” or “here’s what we want but aren’t prepared to pay for.”

    TBF, I think most people ‘in IT’ here aren’t entry level any more, and we’re scattered across the country (and beyond), which is possibly why you haven’t had a stampede.

    Teasing aside, if someone had offered me £25k as an IT graduate I’d have torn their arm off (though there is London weighting to consider, ofc). My first job in IT was a helpdesk role, it was in 1992 and my starting salary was £7,500.

    Yeah it sounds a decent role/salary to me, about £7k more than we start helpdesk people on (although they are only call loggers…).
