I’d go so far as to say that Still Open All Hours is really quite good, the way they (the writers, and David Jason) have developed the character from who he was and wanted to be in the original, into who he has inevitably become, is, for a sitcom, really quite thoughtful and sophisticated. There’s some pathos to be had if you want it. The main drawback to that approach though is that it doesn’t quite work in its own right, independently – there’s no point showing it someone who didn’t watch the original.
