It’s obvious the OP was on the receiving end, I think the best response is “mind your own, knob head” then carry on with having a nice time.

Correct reply is ‘Why don’t you have a gum shield?’

Nah, best response is “baaaaaaah” – that will confuse them for a while (I suspect most helmet nazis won’t ever get it).

obviously it was me and the good lady.

i just cant understand why some people cant keep their thoughts to themselves.

But you needed your wife to stop you doing exactly the same 🙂

no, i was just going to explain to him nicely why we were not wearing helmets.

I left it at your mum’s house is my standard answer to that sort of thing. Absolutely childish, but always makes me smile.

    So why weren’t you ?

because i am a 51 year old bloke, who has cycled since being 13 years old, and thus far have yet to fall off my bike whilst pottering at 10mph.
and if i had the misfortune of being hit by a car whilst pottering on my bike a 10mph, a flimsy plastic shell would do very little to stop me being injured.

I found a good solution to this one – I usually ride a unicycle with my kids when they’re riding their bikes. Clearly a unicycle is different and you don’t need a helmet. Worked fine until youngest learned to ride a unicycle.

Tony, a guy I worked with, about our age, mad keen MTB and road rider, a few years ago died when he fell, somehow, riding at about 10mph, on way back from local shop when on a family holiday. Investigation reckoned that his head caught edge of pavement and lack of helmet was contributory to outcome, though not the reason he fell…..

Why not just wear one ?

Why not just wear one ?

because i choose not to. no other reason.
i like to wear clothes that i am comfy in whilst cycling. i dont want to wear clothing that people think you should wear because you ride a bike.

risk assessment innit? I reckon you’ve got it about right (I note I even wear one on a unicycle when off-road 😉 )

^^ whilst I agree, its most often the unexpected and innocuous ones that do most damage ?

Oh, and clip up your backpack and pop on a pair of gloves too please 🙂

Gloves? That really is fighting talk. I never wear gloves to ride a bike unless I need them for warmth.

As for unexpected and innocuous ones, the same goes for lots of other activities we do which don’t “need” helmets.

But one needs gloves for even washing the dishes surely ?

You have to admit no helmet looks cool

Thought I must admit these days I wear one on and off road.

I think it was TdF 1989 Superbagneres.

No I’m wrong. 1990 it is.

I’ve had car drivers shout at me ( usually after I have remonstrated with them for poor driving) for not wearing a helmet but never another cyclist. Some weirdos out there

tch TJ – we’re discussing the 1990 TdF now.

    Pic is ALpe d’Huez

Deffo Millar and Indurain, don’t know who the yellow jersey is, not Delgado as he’s riding a Lemond?

    I digress.

    1990 you say Tony?

Wasn’t Casartelli the one who came off & bumped his nut in the 95 Tour & consequently popped his clogs?

MJ is definitely Pensec – still don’t think that’s Indurain, though I was wrong about Chiappucci as it is a Banesto jersey. But just to come back to the earlier discussion, every pic I can find of Indurain he’s wearing gloves (and he seems to wear a watch on his right wrist).

Sorry back on track, no more Tdf waffling… When nosey, interfering, opinionated b’stards give me unsolicited advice on helmets my answer is ‘but you’re not wearing a life jacket’. The response is usually along the lines of ‘well I don’t have to’ followed by an ‘oh….’ from me.

I’m capable of choosing all the things I need to choose including which shoes to put on and what colour pants to wear. If helmets were mandatory, fair enough, comply. They’re not, so do your thang and interfering busy bodies sod off.

Incidentally, whether or not you should wear one is another (endless/pointless) discussion entirely.

Have to say I’m with you OCB, but it really boils my urine when I see the kids riding with lids on and Dads is hanging off the bars.

This is the only unacceptable place for a helmet to be – on head, fine. Left at home for convenience on a low risk ride – fine. But why people would go to the effort of taking one with them and then not wear it I can’t understand.

Anyway, you did right not to ride after them, being a loud mouthed opinionated idiot isn’t, luckily for many of us, a crime.
