I like Alan Carr, his humour and interview methods are snort worthy at times, I like the way he plays on his campness in the interviews, but it got me thinking.

If he wasn’t gay would he be funny?

this thread is an interesting concept – would X be funny if they had a completely different personality ?????????

fwiw, i think you’re confusing camp with gay. i think you’ll find you can be one without the other.

You may be right, but is Graham Norton camp? I find him funny, but Alan Carr very not funny.

    +1 camp vs gay

Would Bill Bailey be funny if he wasn’t surreal?

Would Jack Dee be funny if he wasn’t grumpy?

Would Justin Edwards be funny if he wasn’t posh?

maybe the question should have been..

would Alan Carr be funny if he didn’t have a face that looked like it had caught on fire and been put out with a shovel…?

I can’t remember who it was that said it (maybe Stewart Lee), but some comedian argued that half the Irish comics wouldn’t be funny without their celtic lilt.

I used to be filled with a totally irrational and overwhelming hatred of Alan Carr. In fact I would force myself to watch him for several minutes if ever I encountered him on the telly, just to remind myself how unfunny he was and how much I would like to punch his face. Then to my horror I discovered that I actually started to like him on ‘Chatty Man’ as he interviewed guests, and I would end up settling down to watch his show.

Yep, I quite like him now. He is a comedian after all – so it’s probably a good idea not to take him too seriously. And in answer to the OP, the fact that he is a raving in poofter clearly is indispensable. I could never understand the appeal of Larry Grayson though.

I like him, and I often listen to his show on Radio2 with Melanie Sykes….if you don’t like him then fair point

Julian and his freind Sandy off Round the Horn on the radio where funny, lots of innuendo and a bit of smut.

I think the thing with gay comedianes is their ability to ask questions a hetro-comedian could /wouldnt ask, and the answer they get are ususlly quite funny.

Annoyingly they seem to always attract very good looking women.

I took Bullheart’s photo/comment as Turdus Turdus – which is latin name for thrush. Could be wrong though……….. 😕

his stand up is rather funny. certainly not the funniest guy around but I think his sexuality is nothing to do with his funnyness and more to do with his campness. if you don’t like him, don’t listen/watch

Carr can, on occasion, be mildly amusing, but that’s about it. Nowt to do with being camp or gay, or having a really irritating voice. Micheal MacIntyre sells out huge tours, but I find him hopelessly unfunny, I’ve watched him on TV a number of times, and nothing he’s said has made me smile, let alone laugh. Sadly, very few modern comics actually seem to be genuinely funny. Dave Allen, now he really was funny.

by the way…this show is the biggest waste of air time going…two people guffawing constantly, mercilessly, hysterically, yet in an obviously scripted way, about things that are simply not funny in the slightest. I am afraid they both come across as empty-headed and the show is boring, unless of course you like inane tittle-tattle, lame puns, manufactured segues and of course, to listen to two people laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing………

From your critique you have obviously been listening to the Alan Carr and Melanie Sykes show on Radio2 very intently trailertrash, despite the fact that it is undoubtedly not aimed at people like you, ie, people who don’t like Alan Carr and Melanie Sykes.

And for that reason I would suggest that it isn’t a “waste of air time” ……you have clearly devoted some time listening to it. Even though presumably you hate yourself for it.

But the question wasn’t about your sexual preferences.

I never found his interviewing particularly funny, but I’ve seen him doing stand up a couple of times and he’s made me laugh.

Michael McIntyre – what the hell is funny about that man? His tendency to laugh at his own jokes annoys the living crap out of me.
