I don’t know how it works but, if it’s based on making choices that give you the best probability of success (like playing poker or backgammon), you can make bad choices but win through blind luck. However, if you play 1,000 times, luck will even out and somebody who makes probabilistically good choices will beat someone who makes poor choices and hopes to get lucky. For example, “slyly” would not be a good choice for an opening word, even if you get lucky and it’s the word of the day because, on average, it would give you less information than an opening word like “irate”.
