Just switched this on after all the hype- absolute stonewall pen, shouldn’t take >5 min to award. Ridiculous american football style ref mic, then no retake for Spain when the keeper moved waaay before the ball was struck. England cant seem to make a successful pass for anything more than 15yrds. Im going to retire back to garage fettling i think.

getting a bit frantic from both sides – with injuries, subs and a VAR check there’s still best part of 20 mins to play.

Nope, still had a foot on or behind the line, as per the law. One foot moving forward is ok.

You’ve joined just as I noted it’s gone a bit frantic. Has been very high quality in the most part, Spain are so good on the ball, the way they triangled out of their own corner 10 minutes ago was superb. But if you’re just going to be critical anyway then go back to the garage.

Weird critism of the VAR nonsense, this isn’t a women’s game thing, FIFA will be rolling it out across all the competitions.

And yes there is going to be a lot of injury time this half.  Looks like we’re going to need it…

Still think it’s been a great game, the frantic change in pace was what England needed to break the Spanish grip on possession

Tuned in for the second half did’nt realise there would be an hour of it. I for one would like to see much stricter measurement of time wasting in mens football.

    Well played both teams.

for all that have criticised the GK in the women’s game, that is a MAGNIFICENT claim by a kid with 4 caps in the last minute of a world cup final.

Well done Spain, had most of the quality on show today.

Spain probably deserved that on balance.  Bit too much shithousery from Spain at the end though.

Considering how poor England were earlier in the tournament even reaching the final is an achievement

You’ve not watched any premier league games this season then? Refs are coming down hard on it, carding players for it and adding on every second they spend needlessly fannying around

Spain looked a lot stronger than England towards the end there

Well-deserved by Spain. Cut us open at will and should have had more.

I tuned in with 16 mins of normal time to go and thought Spain looked a far better side.

The first half hour was great, England looked really good. Then Spain started to gain the upper hand and England got worse and fell apart second half.

@Binners No I am Scottish, I don’t watch EPL very much. My comments were based on watching the SPL , and european matches. Hopefully  the SPL refs will clampdown on it too.

Anyway I have really enjoyed womens football for a few years now. The standard of play is in my opinion very high equal to or very near equal to mens football and comes without a lot of the bs.

    It’s a toughie, isn’t it?

The 13 minutes was due to the ridiculous VAR wait and the injury – not really for any time-wasting. The match was much better than PL in that respect.

As for the shithousery, I’m not sure what you’re referring to as when Spanish players went down it seemed to be because they’d been stood on.

@gordimhor – hopefully it’ll be across the board. The most notable one was Trent Alexander Arnold getting carded for deliberately faffing around while taking a throw in. If players know they’re going to get carded for time wasting, hopefully it’ll stop.

I agree with you about the womens football. I’ve got two teenage daughters who both play and both love watching it. Girls Football is massive now, so the standards of the young players coming through will just get better and better

as has been said before, maybe on the main Football thread; the quality and technique is very high and in some ways is ‘better’ than lower league (EFL1/2 for example) – I’ve seen some lower league stuff recently and while there are good bits, some of it is dreadful.

The difference of course is in pace and power – the men’s game is so much faster and as a result there’s not enough time on the ball for players with lower skill levels to execute their skills before some 6’3″ centre back is trying to launch you and the ball into row Z. At least, not consistently, hence it becomes like pinball at times. The women’s game is slower and consequently the skill and technique can come through.

IMHO – where it lacks is in decision making at times – maybe composure – even today some bad choices made in the final third and as a result chances weren’t created where really they should have been.

The other area that has been exceptional is the improvement in goalkeeping. IDK if people watched from early, but someone said that some of the WPL teams still only have part time specialist coaches or no coaching for GK at all. For the true specialist position where technique, positioning, etc., is paramount, the change where they’ve been properly coached has been revolutionary.

I don’t know about that. I thought there was some excellent Pep-style naughtiness going on: there were a couple of clear dives, the yellow card for Hemp appeared to have no contact at all, while the very late bodycheck on Hemp to snuff out an attack in the first half was lightly dealt with. And Paralluelo booting the ball away to delay an England throw-in was ignored by the ref, but she got a telling off from her manager because she was already on a yellow and he saw exactly what she was up to.

But this just makes it harder to be gracious in defeat. Spain were the better team. More technically skilful, smarter with the ball, aggressive without it, and with the composure not to just hoof it upfield when pressured. Disappointing. But still. With players like Lauren James coming through I’m looking forward to what’s next.

Jess Carter won me over this tournament too. A year ago I thought she was slow, careless, not cut out for the top level. But she has been excellent this summer.
