I’m considering buying a Day 1 Alfine but one of the uses will be pulling the children in the trailer. The trailer is attached to a standard qr skewer currently, is this still possible with an Alfine 8?

No, the Alfine uses a solid, nutted axle

Don’t think so, the Alfine has to be done up with a cap nut and non turn washer. The axle will probably be too thick – 9mm.

If the trailer did fit you’d need to put the bracket between the non-turn washer and the cap nut, and definitely not between the non-turn washer and the frame. Make sure enough threads are available afterwards to put the cap nut on or you may strip the cap nut threads off tightening it up – they are designed to strip before the axle does, as replacing an Alfine axle will not be cheap.

I feared that might be the case.

Perhaps something like this would offer a solution?

    What trailer do you have?

I use my Alfine’d bike daily with a Croozer Kid for 1 trailer. Works fine but as philtricklebank says you have to put the hitch between the non-turn washer and the nut. I’ve loads of thread on my axle so this isn’t a problem at all.

Its an Adventure AT3, the coupling looks like this

Looks like that’ll go on as the plate between the cap nut and the non turn washer doesn’t look to thick. If the hole is 9mm you should be fine. If the hole just takes the narrower QR skewer then you’ll have to come up with something else – those BOB nutz look OK too – just replace the cap nut with one and beware of stripping the axle threads if they are not sacrificial.

Thanks Phil, I’ll pop into the shop with the coupling and hopefully they will let me try it. Fingers crossed!

Looks identical to my cheap SJS cycles trailer, I put it on the outside of the frame with the nut then tightened over the top. Has been there for 5 years with no bother so far.

edit to say that 5 years on the mtb, 4 years on the pompino with alfine hubs.
