Who still uses Twitter / X and why?

Copied from Dave Troy on Twitter (so you don’t have to click a Twitter link)
/IMPORTANT thread about Bluesky, for those fleeing there. Folks know that it was seeded by Jack Dorsey around a libertarian vision of a magical network that wouldn’t need moderation because it would be decentralized and baked into a protocol (somehow).
2/The people who aided Dorsey in pursuing this vision were other libertarian/post-rationalists connected with effective altruism and other online anarchist movements. One network called TPOT (‘that part of Twitter’) was instrumental. It carried over into Bluesky’s founding DNA.
3/Someone made the visualization above in 2023, showing the TPOT/EA network quite clearly. EA as you know is part of TESCREAL and the belief systems that have driven Sam Bankman Fried and Elon Musk. SBF also put money into Musk’s Twitter buy.
4/Now that Dorsey has bailed, Bluesky’s DNA is basically TPOT people but without a funding source. Who is going to win in that scenario? I don’t know, but I’m not putting money on the users.
5/Bluesky’s most recent funding round was provided by Blockchain Capital LLC. What do those folks want from their investment? I don’t know. But that’s the question to be asking. Crypto money outspent Big Oil in this cycle … to the tune of $200mm.
So anyway it’s fun to call it “the good place” but the fact is users will likely once again get a rude awakening when it either collapses or is captured by Musk, or worse. You’re using a free service on someone else’s dime; you should ask what they want from you.
7/More on that Blockchain Capital LLC funding round here.
10/?It get’s worse. Blockchain Capital LLC was co-founded by Steve Bannon pal Brock Pierce, a major crypto advocate, perennial presidential candidate, and close friend of Eric Adams. Pierce has dozens of other shady MAGA/Russia ties as well.

I still use it because I think living in your own bubble of people who only think like you is counter-productive.Isn’t that the issue though? The algorithm just shows you more and more of the same – so you don’t get a balanced view. You end up living more and more in your own bubble – intolerant of anyone who dares to have a different opinion?
2PoopscoopFull Memberintolerant of anyone who dares to have a different opinion?
That’s what you think eh? Well, **** you!!
2mattyfezFull MemberIt’s basically a republican state sponsored social media platform now, so is mostly useless, IMO.

returns a page doesn’t exist?
PoopscoopFull Member^^ Works for me but I only access X via a browser. If you long click the link if might give you another option of how to open it?
(Not having the app installed is one of the ways I keep my usage down.)
somafunkFull MemberI’ve signed up and spent the last few hours searching for my Twitter follows on bluesky and I’ve found 50 out of 106, out of those 50 only 6 have any posts.
So back to Twitter it is.
2boltonjonFull MemberDeleted my account today after spending a couple of days on BlueSky
Using the new app really showed how nasty X had become

ArghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhYou have only yourself to blame! 😀
They have announced it will be a natural birth,* so it will be delivered through the anus whilst Trump shags the midwife.
*For a MAGA.
1mccraqueFull MemberInteresting to see that German Football Club, St Pauli – announced yesterday that they will be no longer using X – Calling it a “vehicle to spread hate” – or something along those lines.
They’re pretty far to the left as a club, but wondering whether many others will follow suit.
slowoldmanFull MemberStaying within the safety of my Following tab it’s only the quantity of adds that drives me mad on X
Agreed. It’s only the ads that are really annoying. I’ve also got loads of followers since Musk took over, though most just seem to want to show me their tits. I’m still there because there are some people on it who continue to inform/entertain/amuse me.

My favourite non-local club for their ethics and diversity stance.

And these people
I’m still there because there are some people on it who continue to inform/entertain/amuse me
The same?
DracFull MemberFinally I was able to delete my account, for months it would come up with an error.

The same?ROFL!
I’m still deriving a certain amount of childish amusement from shitposting/trolling the low-IQ knuckledraggers who infest Xitter, although not all are low IQ, there are plenty who are, I guess reasonably intelligent, but they aren’t very smart. Referring to Elonia Musk as Trump’s new First Lady, and seemingly getting away with it, is rather satisfying.

billabong987Full MemberI hate new twitter, I get exposed to opinions I disagree with and sometimes people say mean things to me, it’s the worst.
Old twitter was so much better. It was great when the state could give them a call and have people censored who disagreed with the official narrative. When people would get banned for heinous crimes like dead naming and dangerous conspiracy theories like maybe covid escaped from a lab. Good times.

So, ermmm, new twitter then. Although admittedly Musk seems to only do that now for authoritarian governments.
3fenderextenderFree MemberI’ve just given up.
Winding up thick fascist twunts was basically my reason for using it, but it was shooting fish in a barrel.
Weird thing, though. That Allison Pearson harpy – I thought she was just a Twitter ‘mouth’ giving it large with no trousers, just like all her sort. Lo and behold, the current story about her pathetic dribbling reveals her to be a bona fide Telegraph columnist.
I mean, honestly. I knew the Telegraph was a shit nazi comic nowadays, but I didn’t realise they had a muppet like her as a ‘star columnist’. Talk about scraping the barrel.
1jamesoFull MemberWinding up thick fascist twunts was basically my reason for using it, but it was
.. just feeding the algorithm. So we use our time and energy to grow the platform, while changing nothing.
X is waste of time. I deleted a while back and just don’t miss it.
bikesandbootsFull MemberLike it or not, it’s the place where important information is exchanged between people. It’s not good that we’re reliant on it, but that’s what lots of organisations have allowed to happen, and it’s all but impossible to just move them all to somewhere else while retaining the connections.
For example, the Fell Top Assessors (https://x.com/LakesWeather) seem to be continuing this winter, while the Snowdon Weather report has deleted their account and set up a website https://yrwyddfa.live/
Losing thousands of followers to which they provided a direct feed of safety information which also had a secondary purpose of marketing. I expect local businesses would much rather the public sector whoevers hadn’t done this.
crazy-legsFull MemberI’ve also got loads of followers since Musk took over, though most just seem to want to show me their tits.
Yep, my account (which I didn’t use much anyway, certainly not for posting) has been gaining lots of Femalename.Bunchofnumbers followers, most of whom don’t seem to own many clothes.
Also getting a fair few likes on years-old tweets, presumably to get me to engage/follow back or something.
The actual useful people I followed on there, mostly to do with transport stuff, have long since migrated to Bluesky.
nickcFull MemberIt’s horrific if you just get the main feed. The promoted posts on the feed I’ve opened just now are Musk, Darren Grimes, Alex Jones, GB News and some randomly generated “are foreigners awful, retweet if you like” sort of crap. How anyone is still putting up with that shite if they have a ounce of critical thinking is beyond me.
misteralzFree MemberWell that didn’t work. It was supposed to be Austrian Air’s final tweet.
Cougar2Free MemberI’m still on there. I wouldn’t go as far as to say I’m a particularly active user.
I don’t have the content issue that so many seem to have, but I restrict my feed to people I actually choose to follow. I get the occasional “… has followed you” alert from accounts which are clearly bots, back in the day I would have blocked them but I just don’t care sufficiently any more.
onewheelgoodFull MemberWell that didn’t work. It was supposed to be Austrian Air’s final tweet.

<edit> ah, that didn’t work either – it was the case for a while that if you replaced ‘x’ with ‘twitter’ then the hamsters would understand it. No longer, it seems. </edit>
onewheelgoodFull MemberIt’s not just a problem if you look at ‘For you’. The replies to perfectly reasonable tweets in my ‘Following’ feed are just hateful. And the departure of so many decent people really seems to be winding the scumbags up into a frenzy.
1thecaptainFree MemberTwitter is now dead for my main interests. They have all moved to bluesky – well, something like 90% of the top posters anyway, with the rest possibly being largely inactive accounts. Not before time.
