I was thinking today that I should wax my frame with car wax/polish.
Thinking about it we spend a hell of a lot on bikes so why have I never polished one until today!
Been cycling propey for 15 years ish now.
I take it there’s more people who polish there bikes,
Come on let’s out you all, anal cleaners out there!!

There is quite a significant difference between how a wax and a polish work.

No, but you can bake it in the oven and varnish it.

I think it comes down to this statement:

we spend a hell of a lot on bikes

As I don’t spend a lot on bikes I wouldn’t want to waste my life polishing a near valueless collection of metal and plastic which I merrily clatter over roots and coat in mud… Clean it now and then fine, but Polish and/or wax a bicycle? WTF is wrong with people?

Clearly my priorities are way out of whack…

I do it before I build a bike, but I’m not notorious for cleaning my bike. 🙂

I’ve been known to scotchbrite my ragley. And I do tend to polish out scratches etc on new-to-me used frames, not that I object to scratches, I just like them to be mine

Polished and waxed before building up the frame, but just gets a wash now.

I don’t religiously wash my bike every ride – when I do wash it though, after drying, it gets an all over coating of silicone spray, then a wipe off. It comes up lovely

Quick wash down and a quick rub down with gt85 is about as good as it gets

WHen it is new (or clean) a quick rub down with some car wax does seem to help it not attract as much mud. Some swear by silicone spray for this too!

Edric 64, it would be their to be correct old bean, don’t need the capital mid sentence dear boy, get the big D hat on and stand over in the corner of the forum like a good chap!
Jesus I’m bored…….. That big hitter thread has taken it out of me, and no never really polished my bike just a wipe doon now and again.

I’d need to wash it first. Polishing is for people with too much time on their hands.

Occasionally give it a bit of Mr Sheen 😀

Actually do. I read it somewhere that it’s quite good as a protective layer, plus smells nice. Works well on carbon.

GT85 produces a decent enough shine.

Some GT85 made one look a bit better for a bit, but my bikes are there to be ridden not looked at. It looked perfect on day 1 when I picked it up, nearly 2 years later it’s battle scarred and used. I’m not selling soon it I’ll run it into the ground or do a deal with somebody for it. If you have enough time to polish it then you didn’t ride it enough.

Only my ‘best one’ 8) Well I did once, four years ago. A wipe down with some GT85 on a rag has sufficed since.

*Edit: argh argh can see oily fingerprint! Now it’s too late!

I do ocassionally polish ……. I reckon it helps them stay a little cleaner..without having to perpetually wash them..

Usually wash the bike every 3 months or so, when I do finish off with a microfiber cloth sprayed with pedros bike lust silicone polish. Brings it out like new. Takes less than 5 minutes. In between washings just keep the stanchions and chain clean.

Too many wash their bike far too often imho. Thats wasted time. Certainly on a full suss the bearings are happier too.

Once the mud dries it falls off with a bit of a bounce about, and sometimes a sweeping brush. Even when I wash mine, they’re still not clean.

one up, one down, one to polish?

matt black powder coating on my bikes – no need to polish, and since every ride is a race, the textured surface breaks up the surface airflow so you go faster 😉

Just a wash followed by a squirt of Duck Smart and then a wipe of the top and down tubes.
