Whinfell Forest, Centre Parcs….Trails near by??

Off to Centre Parcs with family next weekend. Are there any decent trails i can sneak away to early morning for a couple hours??

Is there trails nearby a location that’s under 30 minutes drive from Keswick, is that what you’re asking? 😀

about 15-20 minutes drive to Pooley Bridge at the North end of Ullswater from there. Good all weather trails along the Lakeshore via Howtown to Patterdale, can make a loop by going over Boredale Hause or Beda Fell if weather’s ok. Or the Lonscale Fell loop from Threlkeld (towards Keswick) is a swift classic within reach.

Anyway, and seriously, Cross Fell. Have a look on the map – it’s literally across the A66 and you could easily ride. None of this 20 minutes drive, etc, you’re on holiday for goodness sake!

I was there in the summer and one time headed off to whinlatter. Only 30 mins drive and no problems leaving site and getting back in. I also rode round the inside perimeter of the park.relaxed singletrack with a few hills. You can ride off site by riding up the steep hill next to the field archery/driving range and theres a path to a rough track which if you go up takes you to the stables. I went all the way down which takes you through a farm and eventually to cliburn moss nature reserve. Which is scenic for a cheeky ride round. Flat though.

Whinlatter?! This is what’s wrong when tourists come to Cumbria!
There’s excellent trails, as mentioned, from Pooley Bridge, plus loads around High Street. Then there’s also the other side of Ullswater, up and around Helvellyn. Even getting closer to Keswick there’s Lonscale Fell and other rides from either Mungrisdale or Threlkeld. Then Keswick, the Borrowdale Bash! All closer to Whinfell than Whinlatter!
Whinlatter has its place, but surely you’d rather experience the Lakes instead of a man-made trail centre?

20 minutes pedalling gets you here
from where you can go up along High St, or ride the techy rocks of the Ullswater shore BW. If good weather, you can head East and ride to High Cup Nick and beyond (Cross Fell);

I nipped out for some stuff to eat one evening from a local farm shop and the reception I got from security on the way back in was bizarre – they didnt believe that I would want to leave the reservation to buy some decent stuff to eat when their on site supermarket and restaurants catered to your every need

Whinlatter might well have a place on a wet, windy, muddy weekend in November. It’s also not a bad place to go if the rest of the family want somewhere they can come too

We often go to Whinfell off season and I negotiate a trip to Whinlatter. MrsJ and the boy play there for a bit then when they’ve had enough they drive to Keswick and I ride down to meet them. It’s better than not riding after all.

If you have the opportunity to escape domestication then make the most of it and rides some real Lakeland fells and avoid Whinlatter unless you only have a couple of hours and can’t read a map.
Anything around Ullswater would be ace.
